Correction Regarding Media Coverage on “JICA Africa Hometown” ｜ News＆Publication - JICA

JICAが第9回アフリカ開発会議（TICAD9）で発表した、アフリカのパートナー諸国にとって象徴的な「JICAアフリカ・ホームタウン」に日本のいくつかの都市を指定した件に関して、「タンザニア・タイムズ」、「プレミアム・タイムズ（ナイジェリア）」、「ビジネス・インサイダー・アフリカ」、「BBCニュース・ピジン」などの複数のメディア報道やアフリカ政府の声明に、不正確な情報や誤解を招く可能性のある情報が含まれていました。
In connection with JICA’s recent designation of certain Japanese cities as symbolic “JICA Africa Hometown” for partner countries in Africa — announced at the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9) — several media reports and statements by an African government, including coverage from “The Tanzania Times” , “Premium Times (Nigeria)”, “Business insider Africa”, and “BBC News Pidgin”, have contained inaccuracies and potentially misleading information.

「JICAアフリカ ホームタウン」は、各自治体がアフリカ諸国と築いてきた関係をさらに強化し、アフリカの課題解決と日本の地域社会の活性化の双方に貢献することを目的としています。
The “JICA Africa Hometown” aims to further strengthen the relationships that each municipality has built with African countries, contributing both to addressing challenges in Africa and revitalizing local communities in Japan.

JICAは、8月21日（木）に開催されたイベントにおいて、以下の都市を「JICAアフリカ ホームタウン」に正式に認定し、それぞれのパートナー国との交流を促進しました。
At an event held on Thursday, August 21, JICA officially designated the following cities as “JICA Africa Hometowns” to promote exchanges with their respective partner countries:

今治市（愛媛県）とモザンビーク
Imabari City (Ehime Prefecture) with Mozambique

木更津市（千葉県）対ナイジェリア
Kisarazu City (Chiba Prefecture) with Nigeria

三条市（新潟県）とガーナ
Sanjo City (Niigata Prefecture) with Ghana

山形県長井市とタンザニア
and Nagai City (Yamagata Prefecture) with Tanzania

JICAは今後も、連携イベントへの支援などを通じて、各都市の国際交流の促進・強化に取り組んでいきます。
Through support for collaborative events for example, JICA will continue to facilitate and strengthen international exchanges for each city.

しかしながら、一部の現地紙やアフリカ政府においては、「JICAアフリカ ホームタウン」事業により、山形県長井市がタンザニアの国土の一部となるかのような誤解を与えるような報道や、移民の受け入れ促進や日本と当該国との間の渡航に特別な査証の発行が行われるかのような報道がなされておりますが、いずれも事実に反するものです。
However, certain local newspapers and the African government have published reports that may give the false impression that, under the “JICA Africa Hometown” program, Nagai City in Yamagata Prefecture would become part of the country of Tanzania, or reports suggesting the promotion of immigration acceptance or the issuance of special visas for travel between Japan and the respective countries, which are all factually incorrect.

JICAは現在、関係する現地メディアやアフリカ政府に対し、報道内容の誤りを速やかに訂正するよう求めています。
JICA is currently urging the relevant local media and the African government to promptly correct the inaccuracies contained in their coverage.
