3 Quebecers treated after exposure to rabid cat

モントリオール南岸地域の保健当局は木曜日、アライグマ由来の狂犬病への感染が確認された野良猫と接触した3人が、狂犬病への曝露（ウイルスにさらされたこと）に対する処置を受けたと発表しました。
Three people have been treated for rabies exposure after coming in contact with a stray cat that recently was confirmed as having contracted raccoon rabies, the regional health board for the South Shore of Montreal said Thursday.

ケベック州は水曜日、同州モンテレジ地域のゴッドマンチェスターで、猫における同疾患の感染例が初めて確認されたと発表しました。これを受け、当局はペットの飼い主に対し、予防接種を最新の状態にしておくよう呼びかけています。
On Wednesday, Quebec confirmed the first case of the disease in a cat in Godmanchester, in Quebec’s Montérégie region, prompting officials to urge pet owners to keep their animals’ vaccinations up to date.

その翌日、サンテ・ケベック・モンテレジ・サントル（Santé Québec Montérégie-Centre）はCTVニュースに対し、3人が発症予防のための曝露後予防措置（PEP）を受けたと認めました。この病気は、治療せずに放置するとヒトにとって致死的となる恐れがあります。
A day later, Santé Québec Montérégie-Centre confirmed to CTV News that three people received post-exposure prophylaxis to prevent the disease — which can be fatal in humans if left untreated — from developing.

‘This cat lunged at me’

その3人のうちの一人が、地元住民のエリザベス・ドイルさんです。彼女は7月16日、その野良猫に噛まれました。
One of those people was Elizabeth Doyle, a local resident who was bitten by the stray cat on July 16.

「突然、その猫が私に飛びかかってきて、左足にしがみつき、噛みつき、引っ掻いてきたんです」と、彼女は金曜日のインタビューで語りました。
“Out of nowhere, this cat lunged at me, latched onto my left leg, bit, and scratched,” she said in an interview on Friday.

When Doyle tried to pull the cat away, it bit her hand, too.

911（緊急通報）を受けて救急車が到着しましたが、その猫を捕獲する前に、猫は救急隊員の一人も噛んでしまったといいます。二人とも緊急処置を受けました。
After calling 911, an ambulance arrived, but before the cat was captured, she says it bit one of the paramedics as well. Both received emergency treatment.

1週間後、検査の結果、その猫が狂犬病に感染していたことが確認されました。ドイルさんは治療を終えたものの、この出来事による心身の回復にはまだ時間がかかっていると語っています。
A week later, test results confirmed the cat had rabies. Despite finishing her treatment, Doyle says she’s still recovering from the event.

「一人でいることには少し不安を感じています。一人きりで外に出ることはしていません」と彼女は話しました。
“I’m a little leery on my own. I haven’t been outside just by myself,” she said.

狂犬病は命に関わる病気です
Rabies is life-threatening

ケベック州保健当局（モンテレジ・サントル）は、狂犬病は命に関わる危険な病気であるため、感染の疑いがある場合は直ちに治療を受ける必要があると述べています。
Santé Québec Montérégie-Centre said rabies exposure should be treated immediately given how life-threatening it is.

保健当局は声明の中で、「狂犬病の疑いがある動物に噛まれたり、引っかかれたり、あるいはその動物の唾液に触れたりした場合は、患部を15分間洗浄し、予防処置を受けられるよう直ちに『Info-Santé』（電話番号811）へ連絡することが極めて重要です」と強調しました。
“That is why we wish to emphasize how important it is for anyone who has been bitten, scratched, or come into contact with the saliva of a suspected rabid animal to wash the affected skin for 15 minutes and call Info-Santé on 811 without delay so that preventive treatment can be administered,” the health board said in a statement.

曝露（ウイルスにさらされること）の直後に行われる緊急処置は、ほぼ100％の確率で効果を発揮します。
The emergency treatment given immediately after exposure is almost 100 per cent effective.

ドイルさんは現在、飼っている2匹の室内飼いの猫にワクチンを接種済みであり、他の飼い主にも同様の対応を呼びかけています。また彼女は、狂犬病に関しては迅速な行動が命を救うことにつながるという点を、自身の体験談を通じて人々に再認識してもらいたいと願っています。
Doyle has now vaccinated her two indoor cats and wants others to do the same. She also hopes her story reminds people that when it comes to rabies, acting quickly can save a life.

見知らぬ動物には注意を
Be cautious with unknown animals

マギル大学の感染症部門教授であり、熱帯病センターのメンバーでもあるマイケル・リブマン医師は、犬や猫における狂犬病の発生は極めて稀であると述べています。
Dr. Michael Libman, professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases and a member of the Centre for Tropical Diseases at McGill University, said rabies in cats and dogs is quite rare.

「とはいえ、狂犬病は致死的な病気です。見知らぬ動物とは遊ばない方が無難でしょう」とリブマン医師は語ります。
“Nevertheless, it’s a lethal disease and it’s probably safer not to play with animals that you don’t know,” Libman said.

「たとえ稀なケースであっても、この病気は発症すれば確実に死に至るものであり、治療法もありません。そのため、まずは感染のリスクがあるかどうかを診察してもらう必要があります。そして、リスクがあると判断された場合には、一連のワクチン接種を受ける必要があります。」
“No matter how rare it is, the disease itself is uniformly lethal and there is no treatment. So you have to go and seek out an assessment whether you have a risk or not and then, if it’s judged that you have a risk, then there’s a series of vaccinations that you need to get.”

ケベック州保健当局（Santé Québec Montérégie-Centre）は、野生動物や見知らぬ動物がたとえ無害そうに見えたとしても、それらと接触しないよう呼びかけています。
Santé Québec Montérégie-Centre is urging everyone to avoid contact with wild or unfamiliar animals, even if they appear harmless.

今年、ケベック州ではアライグマの狂犬病が増加しています。1月1日以降、同州ではアライグマの狂犬病が118件、コウモリの狂犬病が4件確認されました。なお、2025年通年でのアライグマの狂犬病確認数は93件でした。
Raccoon rabies has been on the rise in Quebec this year. Since Jan. 1, Quebec has recorded 118 cases of raccoon rabies and four cases of bat rabies. The province recorded 93 raccoon rabies cases for all of 2025.
