北京発――北朝鮮のメディアが金曜日に報じたところによると、今週、平壌で犬肉料理のコンテストが開催され、地方予選を勝ち抜いた料理人たちが味や盛り付けの出来栄えを競い合いました。
BEIJING - A dog meat cooking contest was held in Pyongyang this week, where chefs who advanced through regional qualifiers competed on taste and presentation, North Korean media reported Friday.

北朝鮮では、犬肉は栄養価の高い食品として親しまれており、同国の伝統的な食文化の一部とみなされています。火曜日から木曜日にかけて行われたこのコンテストは、平壌中心部を流れる大同江（テドンガン）沿いに新しくオープンした犬肉料理専門店を会場に開催されました。
In North Korea, dog meat is enjoyed as a nutritious food and is regarded as part of the country's traditional food culture. The contest, held from Tuesday through Thursday, took place at a newly opened dog-meat specialty restaurant along the Taedong River in central Pyongyang.

報道によれば、参加者たちは制限時間内にスープなどの料理を調理し、それぞれが受け継いできた調理法を駆使して、味や盛り付けの腕を競い合いました。
The contestants cooked up soups and other dishes within a set time limit, competing on taste and presentation using their own inherited cooking methods, according to the media.

韓国にも犬肉を食べる文化がありますが、動物福祉の観点からの反対が高まる中、来年からは食用目的での犬の飼育や屠殺が全面的に禁止されることになります。
South Korea also has a culture of consuming dog meat, but it will start to fully ban raising dogs for meat and slaughtering them for food from next year under growing animal welfare opposition.

一方、北朝鮮では平壌にペットショップがオープンするなど、ペットとして犬を飼うことも一般的になりつつあるようです。
