Dozens of dead Black Sea dolphins spark accusations of Russian ‘ecocide’

Scientists at Ukraine's Tuzly Lagoons National Nature Park said 56 dead dolphins washed up along its Black Sea coastline in June, calling it an unprecedented monthly toll and blaming Russia's war for devastating the region's marine ecosystem.

The park said shell-shocked cetaceans – a zoological category that includes dolphins, whales and other marine mammals – were also found near the port city of Odesa.

"The Black Sea brought to the coast of the Tuzly Lagoons National Nature Park an unprecedented number of dead dolphins - 56 dead animals were physically recorded," the park said in a Facebook post.

公園の科学者らの推定では、ロシアによるウクライナへの全面侵攻が始まってからの4年半の間に、黒海およびアゾフ海において、3種の黒海産鯨類が計約10万頭死亡したとされています。
Park scientists estimate that around 100,000 Black Sea cetaceans from three species have died in the Black and Azov seas during the four-and-a-half years since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

"The only indisputable root cause of this catastrophe is the war," the post said.

研究者らは、機雷の爆発、爆撃、ミサイル発射、強力な軍用ソナー、そして化学汚染といった要因が、黒海の生態系を「崩壊の瀬戸際」に追い込んでいると指摘しました。
Researchers said explosions from naval mines, bombings, missile launches, powerful military sonar and chemical pollution had pushed the Black Sea ecosystem "to the brink of collapse".

Researchers also pointed to the environmental consequences of the destruction of the 1956 Kakhovka dam in 2023, a structure on the Dnipro River in the southern Ukrainian Kherson oblast that was blown up by the Russians leading to flooding and disrupting the surrounding ecosystem.

研究者らによると、イルカは複数の脅威に同時にさらされる「連鎖的」な危機に直面しており、それぞれの要因が互いを増幅させ、死の連鎖を引き起こしているといいます。
They said dolphins were facing a "cascade" of multiple threats acting simultaneously, with each factor reinforcing the others and triggering a chain reaction of mortality.

同公園は、こうした事態を「野生生物に対する犯罪であり、真の『エコサイド（生態系破壊）』」と位置づけ、その証拠として個々の事例を記録していると述べています。
The park said it was documenting every case as evidence of what it described as "a crime against wildlife and a true ecocide."
