難民福祉委員会の外国人委員として南京の金陵学院に残っていたアメリカ人教授たちは、脱走した中国陸軍大佐とその部下6人をかくまっていたことを知り、ひどく当惑した。
American professors remaining at ginling college in Nanking as foreign members of refugee Welfare Committee were seriously embarrassed to discover that they had been harboring a deserted Chinese Army colonel and six of his subordinate officers.

The professors had, in fact, made the colonel second in authority at the refugee camp.
