【教育再設計⑫】鬼塚英吉は今の子どもたちに響くのか ― GTOがリバイバルされると聞いて、少し不安になった話―
GTOがリバイバルされると聞いた。
私はまだ見ていない。
しかし、ニュースを見た瞬間に少しだけ不安になった。
今の子どもたちに、鬼塚英吉という教師はどう映るのだろうか。

私たちは鬼塚英吉に憧れていた
私が高校生だった頃、鬼塚英吉は衝撃的な教師だった。
元暴走族。
生徒と本気で向き合う。
校則よりも生徒を優先する。
教師らしくない教師。
当時の学校には、そんな先生はほとんどいなかった。
もちろん熱心な先生はいた。
生徒思いの先生もいた。
しかし、鬼塚のように生徒のためなら学校組織と正面からぶつかるような教師は、少なくとも私の周囲にはいなかった。
だからこそ、多くの若者が憧れたのだと思う。
鬼塚英吉は、現実には存在しない理想の教師だった。

今の学校には鬼塚的な先生がいる
ところが、30年近く学校現場にいると面白いことに気付く。
今の学校には、鬼塚的な先生が珍しくない。
もちろん元暴走族ではない。
しかし、
生徒と同じ目線で話す。
生徒の趣味を理解しようとする。
生徒を頭ごなしに否定しない。
進路や家庭の悩みに本気で向き合う。
そんな先生は確実に増えた。
私が若い頃に憧れた教師像は、少しずつ現実になってきたのだと思う。
かつてはドラマの中にしかいなかった先生が、今は職員室の中にいる。
それは教育にとって、とても良い変化だったのではないだろうか。

それでも鬼塚は成立しない
一方で、今の学校で鬼塚がそのまま働けるかと言われると難しい。
コンプライアンス。
情報共有。
リスク管理。
保護者対応。
個人情報保護。
現代の学校は、教師一人の情熱だけで動く組織ではない。
鬼塚はよく、
「俺が責任を取る」
で物事を突破していた。
しかし今はそうはいかない。
責任を取るのは個人ではなく組織であり、だからこそ教師も生徒も守られている部分がある。
もし鬼塚が現代の学校に現れたら、生徒から人気が出る前に管理職との面談が始まるかもしれない。

子どもたちはどう感じるのだろう
だから私は少し不安になる。
今の子どもたちは鬼塚英吉を見てどう思うのだろう。
「こんな先生がいてほしい」
と思うのか。
それとも、
「ちょっと危ない先生だな」
と思うのか。
もしかすると、私たちが感じた衝撃はもう存在しないのかもしれない。
なぜなら鬼塚が持っていた価値観の一部は、すでに学校現場へ浸透しているからだ。

鬼塚が古くなったわけではない
しかし考えてみると、それは悪いことではない。
鬼塚が古くなったのではない。
鬼塚が目指した教師像が、少しずつ現実になっただけなのだ。
生徒を信じる。
生徒の話を聞く。
失敗しても見捨てない。
それは今でも多くの教師が大切にしている。
派手なパフォーマンスはなくても。
屋上から飛び降りることはなくても。
生徒と向き合う教師は今もたくさんいる。
もし今の子どもたちがGTOを見て、
「そんなに特別な先生には見えない」
と思ったとしたら。
それは鬼塚英吉が時代遅れになったのではない。
鬼塚英吉が憧れた教師像に、現実の学校が少し近づいたということなのかもしれない。

I have not watched it yet.
But when I saw the news, I felt a small sense of concern.
How will today’s students view Eikichi Onizuka?

We Admired Onizuka
When I was a high school student, Onizuka was a shocking character.
A former gang member.
A teacher who genuinely cared about students.
Someone who prioritized students over school rules.
A teacher who did not act like a teacher.
At the time, there were very few teachers like him.
Of course, there were dedicated teachers.
There were caring teachers.
But a teacher willing to confront the entire school system for the sake of a student was something I had never seen in real life.
That is why so many young people admired him.
Eikichi Onizuka was an ideal teacher who did not really exist.

Today’s Schools Have Onizuka-Like Teachers
However, after spending nearly thirty years in education, I have noticed something interesting.
Teachers with Onizuka-like qualities are no longer rare.
Not former gang members, of course.
But teachers who:
listen to students,
speak to them as equals,
try to understand their interests,
and genuinely care about their problems.
Those teachers have become much more common.
The teacher we once admired as a fictional ideal has gradually become part of reality.
The kind of teacher who once existed only in television dramas can now be found in the staff room.
I believe that is a positive change.

Yet Onizuka Could Not Survive Today
At the same time, I am not sure Onizuka himself could survive in today’s schools.
Modern education requires:
compliance,
risk management,
information sharing,
parent communication,
and accountability.
Schools are no longer places where one passionate individual can solve everything alone.
Onizuka often overcame obstacles simply by saying:
“I’ll take responsibility.”
But that approach no longer works.
Responsibility today belongs to the organization as much as the individual.
That protects both teachers and students.
If Onizuka suddenly appeared in a modern school, he might be called into a meeting with administrators long before becoming a hero.

How Will Today’s Students See Him?
That is why I feel slightly uneasy.
How will today’s students react to Onizuka?
Will they think:
“I wish I had a teacher like that.”
Or will they think:
“That teacher seems a little dangerous.”
Perhaps the shock we felt in the 1990s no longer exists.
After all, many of the values that made Onizuka unique have already become part of everyday education.

Onizuka Has Not Become Outdated
But perhaps that is not a bad thing.
Onizuka has not become outdated.
Reality has simply moved closer to the ideal he represented.
Believing in students.
Listening to them.
Refusing to abandon them when they fail.
These values remain important today.
Teachers may not jump off rooftops.
They may not challenge authority in dramatic ways.
But many still dedicate themselves to supporting students.
If today’s young people watch GTO and think,
“He doesn’t seem that extraordinary,”
that may not mean Onizuka has become irrelevant.
It may mean that the kind of teacher he represented has quietly become part of the real world.

A Sentence for the Future
Onizuka did not become outdated. The teacher who once existed only in fiction gradually found a place in real schools.
