Calling it a dream would be an exaggeration? Night market in Amphawa, the din of drinking and singing. Running a small boat across the calm waters, looking up from the silence of the surface, there are fireflies twinkling like a Christmas tree. It’s a midsummer night’s dream. Blessed by the sky, after all the feasts, pouring down in silence onto Mae Klong River.
It was surely either the dawn of Heisei or the dusk of Showa era. The night markets in Fukuyama and the summer festival in Mitsugi were crowded with children. The food stalls served Ring-shaped okonomiyaki, Corn dogs, Oban-yaki pancakes, Candied apples, Crepes, and Shaved ice. Along the Mitsugi river, Ashida-gawa river’s tributary, Eel-grabbing competitions. Water flows, fields and villages dot the landscape. Where gathering places exist, gathering people exist. Adults wearing happi coats, beating drums, drinking beer, Ohayashi-musical and karaoke competitions. The grand finale ended with fireworks. All of a sudden, it came back to me. There was something here reminding me of it. If this is not a dream, then what is this? The rise and fall, but I want to defy, defy! The strong will to pass this on to the next generation becomes fertilizer and sustenance, making it possible to raise children. It’s tough. Then and Now. You’ve done well. You’d done well—that’s why we’re here.

Our journey to Hua Hin began at Khao Luang Cave. Last time the monkey hill at Khao Sam Muk, and this time at Khao Luang. As we descended the adventurous staircase, Buddha statues and stalactites appeared. The boys, excited about a treasure hunt in the cave, were left speechless for a moment by its profound solemnity. The heart-shaped light pouring through the hole in the ceiling heals us.

食事はThe Regent Cha-AmのPeppinaへ。
Lunch at Peppina in The Regent Cha-Am. Peppina is famous for its pizza in Bangkok too. Our youngest brother, who loves cheese, must be in heaven. By the way, daughter's school camp was apparently at this place. Wait, such a beautiful resort? How ridiculous for a kid like her. It’s a world of difference from our “Youth Nature Center” in Japan… though, I can’t help but cherish those memories of sweltering summer days ! Anyway, is it really such a beautiful resort…? With a touch of regret, headed to Hilton Hua Hin.

Pre-notifying about my son's birthday resulted in a “HAPPY BIRTHDAY” bed-making and a mini cake. All hyped up, and headed to the pool. Whether in Phuket or Hua Hin, we ended up choosing Hilton…With 3 kids, choosing a pool for each height range, with a moderate water slide, and a layout where adults can oversee the entire pool area. Just a short walk away, we could touch the seaside nature, play in the sand on the beach, and hunt for marine life. After getting tired, back to the spacious room for a game of tag. In the morning, it’s the buffet—easy, comfortable, and absolutely perfect. Arrive in the afternoon, Wake up in the morning, Just toss them in the pool. On a night in Hua Hin, walked to nearby Chaolay Seafood, but… the kids fell asleep, so we ended up eating and GlapBaan. The walk back was a bit of a struggle…

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Ban Mae Arom。 Next day, too hot to walk outside, indoor playground at Market Village. Adults at the cafe. Followed by Swiss Sheep Farm. Unplanned, about 2 hours feeding carrots to the animals, 3 kids rode the foals, and the vehicle-lovers played on vans, jeeps, and helicopters. Then back to the beginning—to Amphawa. Ban Mae Arom. A bit hard to find, but parked a car, walked down a small path, and were led to a room along the canal. Had the firefly boat reserved for us, and were guided to the Floating Night Market, just a short walk away. Lots of tourists, but still felt somewhat local. Walked along the canal, crossed the bridge to the other side, bought some toys, and had grilled chicken (Kai-Yang) and fried rice (Khao-pad) and GlapBaan. A small boat arrived in front of our room, and the owner, accompanied by a child about the same age as ours, boarded with us. Cutting through the market's hustle and bustle, slicing through the wind under the calm night sky, our small boat glided along. Soon, fireflies began to twinkle, and the children dozed off under borrowed blankets. Good night—what a memorable experience.

Waking up groggy, just slurping congee—then a pad thai boat arrives, bobbing along. Already full, but ordered anyway on curiosity. Must be a high-powered portable gas stove. She pulls pre-cut veggies from a bag, quickly washes hands in the brown-colored water, stirs-fries with a clatter, cracks an egg with one hand, and tosses the shell into the canal. Since the hygiene is highly questionable, my wife and kids didn’t eat—I was the only one to try it. The taste was okay, Just consider this stomach training. With some reluctance, we left Ban Mae Arom. Well, we'll be back to pick up the forgotten anyway.

Unfortunately, the nearby Pinsuwan Benjarong was closed on Sunday. Putting that behind, we headed to the famous Maeklong Railway Market and Damnoen Saduak Floating Market. The railway market, Talat Rom Hup (Umbrella Folding Market). It was hot and humid, and there were tons of tourists. As soon as the train arrived, they all rushed toward it, cell phones in hand, completely ignoring the railroad crossing. Everyone was desperate to capture a video of the market folding their umbrellas. The train moves super slow, but be careful not to get killed for your Instagram shot. We were pushing a kids' stroller along the bumpy railroad tracks and gave up right away. Only my wife went on the expedition and got a cute tuk-tuk shirt and Thai pants.

Next, back to Amphawa in the afternoon to pick up forgotten. Had a break with cats at the riverside café we passed last night. It’s so peaceful. Really like it here. Had another round of Kai-Yang, Khao-pad and GlapBaan. Then moved on to Damnoen Saduak, but it’s a completely touristy spot with no sense of local life. Got on a boat and was forced to buy 2 bottles of beer, after toasting with the boatman, he was in a great mood and took us on a round trip. Even the tourist-trap prices that kill the mood were, well, a learning experience. The kids were happy after buying juice, coconut ice cream, and toys from the small boat vendors, and they fell asleep peacefully. Watched some water monitor lizards, and now it’s time for the last stop.

One regret was that we couldn't go to Pinsuwan, so headed to Benjarong Village instead. This village seems to offer pottery painting workshops, but we arrived in the evening, and it's still a bit too young for our kids. It might be cheaper than Bangkok, but it's still pricey...Please, don't run around and accidentally trip and break anything. We bought two café sets that my wife liked. The Celadons we bought at Chatuchak the other day are for everyday use—with rice, miso soup, and curry. The Benjarong is definitely high-end, perfect for guests. After saying goodbye to the elegant Benjarong rabbit, we left the rain-soaked village behind, and a rainbow arched over the road toward Bangkok. This trip focused on Hua Hin, the floating and railway markets. It was a fulfilling summer vacation where we enjoyed places just a day's drive from Bangkok!
