A Taste of the 1920s: The Century-Old Sweetness of Kurume's "Kurobo"passed down from My Mother
Have you ever heard of "Kurobo," a traditional Japanese baked sweet? In Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture, there is a long-established shop that has preserved the exact same flavor for over a century, since its founding in 1920. Today, I'd like to share my memories of this nostalgic, gentle sweet that my mother introduced to me.
When I was little, these Kurobo sweets would occasionally appear in our home at snack time. My mother always affectionately called them "Kuronbo," which is a kind of local dialect here in Kyushu. As an adult, I looked into its history and was amazed to find out that it was made by "Kurume Kurobo Honpo," a historic shop founded back in 1920—just as my mother said, "the flavor has never changed since the old days." Realizing that this taste has been loved across generations, from my grandmother's era to my mother's, and now to me, made me cherish it even more.
Even now, whenever I happen to be near the shop, I always make sure to buy some Kurobo as a souvenir for myself and my family. The shop building itself has a deeply atmospheric appearance that makes you feel the weight of Japanese history; just stepping inside feels like a luxurious trip back in time. The rich, refined sweetness of brown sugar combined with its uniquely crisp yet soft texture makes it the perfect companion for a cup of green tea.
It feels incredibly romantic to think that people over a century ago were enjoying this exact same sweetness. If you ever have the chance to visit Kurume, please stop by to experience this charming, historic building and the timeless taste of "Kuronbo."
