#40  Mr. Townsend has well perceived that the spring of action which brought about the changes in Japan lay entirely within our own selves; and if he had only probed into our psychology, his keen powers of observation would easily have convinced him that this spring was no other than Bushido.

私の訳：タウンゼンド氏が、日本の変化を造り出した原動力は全く我が国民自身の中に存する事を認識したのは、誠に卓見である。そしてもし氏が更に日本人の心理を精察したらば、氏の鋭い観察力は必ずやこの源泉の武士道に他ならぬことを容易に確認し得たであろう。
