56)  “No,”   the boy said.  “But  I will see something  that he cannot see such as a bird working  and  get him to come out after dolphin.”
57)  “Are his eyes that bad?”　　“He is almost blind.”
58)  “It is strange,” the old man said.  “He never went turtle-ing. That is what kills the eyes.”
59)  “But you went turtle-ing for years off the Mosquito Coast and your eyes are good.”
60)  “I am a strange old man”  “But are you strong enough now for a truly big fish?”  “I think so.   And there are many tricks.”


「そうなんだよ」少年は言った。「でも、親方には見えないものを僕が見つけられるからね、鳥が獲物を探してるところとか。それでシイラの後を追っかけさせて、遠出させてやるんだ」
「あいつの眼はそんなに悪いのか？」 「ほとんど見えてないよ」
「妙だな」老人は言った。「あいつは海亀獲りは一度もやらなかったんだ。あれをやると眼に悪いんだが」
That is what kills the eyes. というのも、洒落た表現だ。

「でも、サンチャゴはモスキート海岸で何年も海亀獲りをやってたのに、すごく眼がいいじゃないか」
off : モスキート海岸から離れて、転じて、モスキート海岸沖で

「俺はおかしな年寄りだからな」「超大物とも戦える？」「大丈夫だ。やり方は色々とある」
