季節とつながる英語学習、秋の森から

日本の秋は本当に美しいですよね。
空気が澄んで、山が色づき、歩くたびに小さな発見があります。
そんな秋の自然のなかで、子どもたちが英語を通して身のまわりの世界を感じられたら素敵だなと思い、
今回の作品を作りました。

英語は、ただ「勉強するもの」ではなく、子どもたちが目にして感じたことを表現できる道具にもなります。
おうち英語を本格的に取り組んでいる方にも、これから少しずつ英語を取り入れてみたい方にも、
「英語で季節を感じる」きっかけになればうれしいです。

🌰 きっかけは日本の童謡

今回のストーリー『Good-bye, Hello Again』は、
日本の名曲 「どんぐりころころ」 と 「大きなくりの木の下で」 から生まれました。

どちらも日本の子どもたちにとってとてもなじみ深い歌ですよね。
この曲たちの世界観を英語の物語として再構成したら、
子どもたちも身近に感じながら楽しく英語を学べるのではないかと思いました。

お話には「さようなら」「こんにちは」「また会おう」というテーマを込めています。
秋の葉っぱや木の実、そして英語のあいさつを通して、別れと再会の季節を感じられるようにしました。

🍂 ことばと理科のつながり

物語を作っていくうちに、これはまるで小さな理科の授業のようになっていきました。
日本にある木の中で、実をつける木はどんな種類があるのか。
そして、それぞれの葉っぱがどんな色に変わるのか。

赤、オレンジ、黄色、茶色。
木の実や葉の色を調べながら、
「ことばで自然を観察する」という新しい英語の学び方が見えてきました。

お話の中では、木の実たちが葉っぱの友だちにまた会える日を待っています。
そして、朝から夜までの流れに合わせて、英語のあいさつも「Good morning」「Hello」「Good afternoon」「Good evening」と変わっていきます。
（ちなみに「Hello」は一日中使えますよ！）

ストーリーに合わせて作ったのが、22ページの英語ワークブックです。
木や木の実、秋の色の名前を「読む・書く・数える・つなぐ」アクティビティを通して楽しく学べます。

まだ書くのが難しいお子さんは、色をぬったり、絵を指さしたりするだけでもOK。
印刷して何度でも使えるPDF形式なので、好きなペースで取り組めます。

私のワークブック作りのテーマはいつも「つながり」です。
絵とことばのつながり、ストーリーと現実のつながり、そして親子のつながり。

English Through the Seasons: Connecting Language and Nature

When autumn arrives in Japan, the air turns crisp, the mountains blush with color, and every walk feels like a story waiting to be told.
I’ve always loved how the changing seasons can inspire children to observe, describe, and wonder, and I knew I wanted to create something that connected that beauty with learning English at home.

English can become so much more meaningful when it helps children understand the world around them.
Whether you’re deeply committed to bilingual education or just beginning your おうち英語 journey, I hope this project can remind you that learning English doesn’t have to be limited to textbooks or cartoons. It can grow from the colors, songs, and traditions that surround us every day.

🌰 Inspiration from Japanese Songs

Two timeless Japanese children’s songs, 「どんぐりころころ」 and 「大きな栗の木の下で」, gave me the spark for my newest early reader story, Good-bye, Hello Again.
These melodies are so familiar to children in Japan that I thought, what if I could build on them to teach English in a way that feels connected and comforting?

In the story, I wanted to capture the gentle rhythm of those songs: the feeling of parting and reunion, of change and continuity.
That’s how the themes of “good-bye,” “hello,” and “we meet again” took root, together with autumn leaves, tree nuts, and greetings in English.

🍂 A Story that Blends Science and Language

As I planned each page, I realized this story was also becoming a mini science project.
I researched which trees in Japan actually bear nuts, and which colors their leaves can turn: red, orange, yellow, or brown.
From the acorn to the chestnut, from the ginkgo nut to the beech nut, I wanted every detail to be accurate enough to inspire real observation outdoors.

As you read, each nut waits to meet its leaf friend again, and the greetings change naturally throughout the day: good morning, hello, good afternoon, and good evening.
It’s a small detail, but it’s a fun way to talk with children about when to use each greeting (and to remember that “hello” always works!).

🍁 The Workbook: Making Connections

To accompany the story, I created a 22-page printable workbook designed to help children read, write, and talk about trees, nuts, and the colors of autumn.
The activities can grow with your child, from simple tracing and coloring to counting, matching, and writing.

If your child isn’t ready to write yet, that’s perfectly okay.
You can color together, circle pictures, or just chat about what you see on each page.
Because it’s a downloadable PDF, you can print and reuse pages as often as you like.

I design all my workbooks with one goal: to help children make connections —
connections between words and pictures, between stories and real life, and most importantly, between parent and child as you explore English together.

There’s also a playful Tree, Leaf, and Nut Card Game inside, which can be used as a memory game or even a rock-paper-scissors battle, a simple way to keep the vocabulary active while having fun.

🎲 Free Printable: Roll, Read & Trace – Autumn Colors Edition

To celebrate the release, I’ve also made a free printable game you can download,
an autumn-color-themed Roll, Read & Trace.

Practice color words — red, orange, yellow, brown, green, and leaves — in a fun, game-style format.
Roll the dice, say the word that matches your number, and trace or write the word in the box.
There are two versions: one all tracing, and another that encourages children to try writing independently.
You can even set a timer if your kids enjoy a challenge.

🌳 Closing Thoughts

Every season brings a new chance to connect language with life.
My hope for Good-bye, Hello Again is that it helps families notice the beauty of Japan’s autumn while learning English that feels alive, not abstract, but rooted in the world right outside your window.

When children realize they can describe falling leaves, golden trees, or chestnuts in English,
they’re not just learning words, they’re learning how to express wonder.
