ART-SCHOOLのトリビュートアルバムが発売になった。本当にすべてのバンドのカヴァーも素晴らしくて、これを機に木下理樹の書く楽曲の良さが多くの人に伝わると嬉しいなと思う。

　NANA-IROのツアーで演奏した「FADE TO BLACK」を録音することができてとても嬉しい。ツアー当時、理樹は体調を崩して長らく休んでいた。どんな気持ちでいたのかは知るよしもないけれど、回復に向けて、少しでもポジティブなメッセージが届いてくれたらと思った。同世代が集うあのツアーで、みんなで演奏したかった。

The ART-SCHOOL tribute album turned out great. 

I was very happy to be able to record "FADE TO BLACK," which we performed on the NANA-IRO tour. At the time of the tour, Riki was in poor health and had been taking a long break.

I know how he felt, but I wanted to send him some positive messages to help him recover. I wanted to get people of my generation together and perform together on that tour.

アジカンは基本的に、カヴァーするときはなるべく原曲に忠実にということを心がけている。そのほうが演奏者の身体性とか音作りの癖とかが露わになって面白いと考えているからだ。細野晴臣さんも「そのままやるのがいい」と言っていたような気がする。とはいえ、自分たちらしい少しの工夫を今回は加えた。

　まずはイントロは多くの人が気がついているように、「サイレン」のドラムフィルとフィードバックを引用している。そこから「FADE TO BLACK」までBPMがせり上がっていくようにした。基本的には、この曲の象徴とでも呼ぶべきアルペジオを引き立てつつ、アジカンらしいオクターブ奏法も追加。ここでかなり自分たちのシグネチャーが出たと思う。

ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION basically tries to stay as faithful as possible to the original songs when they cover them. This is because they think it's more interesting to do so as it reveals the physicality of the performers and their musical habits. I think Haruomi Hosono also said, "It's best to just do it as it is."
