坂口志文

ノーベル生理学・医学賞の受賞が決まった坂口志文・大阪大特任教授（74）が発見した「制御性T細胞」は発表当初、その存在が疑われた。免疫を抑える機能を持つ細胞があること自体が疑問視されていたからだ。それでも坂口氏には確信があった。長い不遇の時期を超え、自説の正しさを地道に証明。今やこの細胞を使って、さまざまな自己免疫疾患の治療研究が世界中で盛んになっている。

When the discovery of "regulatory T cells" by Osaka University Professor Shimon Sakaguchi (74), who was recently awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, was first announced, their existence was doubted. This was because the very existence of cells with immune-focusing functions was questioned. Sakaguchi was confident.
