「地球は青かった・・・」
有名な宇宙飛行士、ガガーリンが地球を見て言った言葉で有名だが、地球の海はわかる。でも、山もたくさんあるから青と緑だったのではないか？と思ったものだ。
その頃、勉強よりもモノづくりの方が楽しくて片っ端から手をつけていた。中でも、熱心だったのはパッチワーク。
主に写真で撮った野山の景色を模写するのが好きだった。富良野のラベンダー畑だとかね。
写真を参考にパッチワークの下絵を描く時に、田や木々や山々が緑のはずなのに遠くに行くほどにどんどん青になっていき、そのうち空と同化してしまう。そこが、不思議でふしぎで。
緑色の種類の多さったら半端ではない。そんな緑色を青のグラデーションが包んでしまうってどう言うわけ？
その頃は、パソコンなんかなくてネットサーフィンももちろん出来ないから調べるには図書館へ行くとか、ちょっと大変なのでそのままにして終わっていた。
「青のグラデーション」のお題で、この話を思い出し、50年も経ち、やっと調べてみると……。
遠くの山や木々が青く見えるのは、山と私たちの目の間にある「空気」が青い光を散乱させているからだそうで、この現象は「レイリー散乱」と呼ばれ、距離が遠くなるほど空気の層が厚くなるため、青が深まっていくのだと。
田や丘や木々の先、何層にも連なる山々が手前から奥にかけて描く「青のグラデーション」。
Google検索で、半世紀も前の疑問がようやく解決したのでありました。

At that time, I found making things more fun than studying, so I tried my hand at everything. Among them, I was most enthusiastic about patchwork.
I mainly liked to copy the scenery of fields and mountains that I had taken in photos. Like the lavender fields of Furano, for example.
When I drew the sketches for my patchwork using photos as a reference, the fields, trees, and mountains, which should have been green, would turn increasingly blue the further away they were, until eventually they assimilated with the sky. I found that so mysterious, so very mysterious.
