#61「健康的な食事」
動物園には、動物たちの食事を専門に考える栄養士がいた。
彼女は毎朝、動物たちの健康状態を確認し、日々の糞や運動量まで見ながら、献立を組み立てていた。
ゾウには、乾草、枝葉、野菜を適切な割合で。
キリンには、消化器官への負担を考えた葉とペレット。
カバには、肥満を防ぐためカロリーを抑えつつ、必要な栄養素を不足なく。
「よし。今日も完璧」
彼女は満足そうに給餌場を見回した。ところが、動物たちの反応はよくなかった。
ゾウは鼻先で野菜を転がしただけだった。
キリンは葉の匂いを嗅ぐと、ぷいと顔を背けた。
カバにいたっては、餌を一瞥したあと、そのまま水の中へ沈んでしまった。
「どうして食べないのかしら」
彼女は悩んだ。栄養価は申し分ない。量も適切。鮮度もいい。念のため獣医師にも相談したが、病気ではなかった。
彼女は時間を惜しんでカップ麺をすすりながらさらに文献を調べた。
その夜。
誰もいなくなった動物園で、ゾウが小さくため息をついた。
「また健康食かよ」
キリンが長い首をゾウの方へ向けた。
「最近、あの人、栄養バランスに凝りすぎじゃない？」
カバが水面から顔を出した。
「分かる。昨日なんか一生懸命考えましたって顔してたもんな」
「こっちは一日中、客に見られて仕事してるんだぜ」
「たまにはカップ麺でも食べたいよなあ」
三頭はしばらく黙った。
やがて遠い目でゾウが言った。
「昔はよかったなあ」
キリンも長い首を上下にしながら大きくうなずいた。
「健康のため、健康のためってさ」
カバが水面に口元だけを出して、ぼそりと言った。
「長生きしたら、その分ずっとここにいるんだろ？」
誰も答えなかった。
翌朝。
栄養士は三頭が餌をほとんど残しているのを見て、ため息をついた。
そしてさらに研究を重ねた。
嗜好性、咀嚼時間、腸内細菌、季節変動。
そして一週間後、これまで以上に科学的で、これまで以上に健康的な献立を完成させた。栄養士は額の汗をぬぐいながら自信満々で餌を並べた。
ゾウは鼻で匂いだけを嗅いだ。
キリンは少しだけ口に入れた。
カバはじっと眺めた。
そして三頭そろって、顔を背けた。
その夜。
ゾウが言った。
「健康診断の前だけ食べればよくない？」
カバが答えた。
「それな」
キリンも前にもまして深くうなずいた。
柵の隅で、AI通訳装置のランプが小さく点滅していた。

あとがき
健康にいいものを食べれば、長生きできる。
でも、長生きすることと、幸せに生きることは同じなのでしょうか。
管理する側には善意があり、管理される側にも本音がある。
そのすれ違いは、動物園の檻の中だけの話ではないのかもしれません。
#61 “A Healthy Diet”
At the zoo, there was a nutritionist whose job was to plan meals for the animals.
Every morning, she checked their condition, monitored their droppings and activity levels, and carefully designed their diets.
For the elephant: hay, branches, and vegetables in just the right proportions.
For the giraffe: leaves and pellets chosen to be gentle on its digestive system.
For the hippo: fewer calories to prevent obesity, without sacrificing essential nutrients.
“Perfect. Another flawless menu.”
She looked over the feeding area with satisfaction.
But the animals were less impressed.
The elephant merely rolled the vegetables around with its trunk.
The giraffe sniffed the leaves, then turned its head away.
The hippo took one look at its meal and sank straight back into the water.
“Why won’t they eat?”
She was baffled.
The nutrition was perfect. The portions were right. Everything was fresh. She even consulted the veterinarian, but none of the animals were sick.
So she kept studying, slurping instant noodles between research papers because she was too busy to stop for a proper meal.
That night.
After everyone had left the zoo, the elephant let out a long sigh.
“Healthy food again?”
The giraffe turned its long neck toward him.
“Don’t you think she’s getting a little obsessed with nutrition?”
The hippo poked its head above the water.
“Seriously. Yesterday she had that ‘I worked really hard on this’ look again.”
“We spend all day being stared at by visitors.”
“Would it kill them to give us some instant noodles once in a while?”
The three fell silent.
After a while, the elephant stared into the distance.
“Things were better in the old days.”
The giraffe nodded vigorously, its long neck bobbing up and down.
“Everything’s ‘for your health’ these days.”
The hippo raised only its mouth above the surface and muttered,
“If we live longer, doesn’t that just mean we stay here longer?”
No one answered.
The next morning.
The nutritionist saw that the three animals had barely touched their food and sighed.
Then she went back to work.
Palatability. Chewing time. Gut bacteria. Seasonal variation.
A week later, she finally created a menu that was even more scientifically balanced—and even healthier than before.
Wiping the sweat from her forehead, she proudly laid out the food.
The elephant sniffed it and nothing more.
The giraffe took a single bite.
The hippo simply stared.
Then all three turned their heads away.
That night.
The elephant said,
“What if we just eat properly right before our health checkups?”
The hippo replied,
“Exactly.”
The giraffe nodded harder than ever.
In the corner of the enclosure, a small light blinked on the AI animal translator.
