ウイルスの意味論 または 健康管理士試験のこと
これは、山内一也『ウイルスの意味論 生命の定義を超えた存在』みすず書房、２０１８年 という本の帯に書かれた文です（画像はアマゾンから引用）。
生命の定義を超えた存在。その生と死は、生物とはどこかずれてい る。分解された親から複製され、破壊さ れても蘇り、体を捨て情報として潜伏し、 突然実体化する。
生物であるような、ないような不思議な存在であるウィルス。生物と非生物をまたぐ存在としてとらえた方がいいのかもしれません。あるいは思い切って「情報」の一つの形態として定義したほうがいいのかもしれません。
ところで、この本の中に、２０１０年代に見つかった巨大ウィルスのことが書かれています。
上の表は、『ウィルスの意味論』から引用したものですが、下から４つ目のパンドラウィルスの大きさは１０００ナノメートル（1マイクロメートル）です。下から３番目のピソウィルスの大きさは、１５００ナノメートル（1.5マイクロメートル）です。２０世紀までは、細菌がマイクロメートル単位の大きさを持つのに対して、ウィルスは大きくてもせいぜいナノメートル単位の大きさしかないと考えられてきました。必ずしもそれは正しくないことが今ではわかっています。
しかしながら、インターネットで検索すると、ウィルスは細菌よりもずっと小さいという記事が多いです。
上の画像は、健康管理士の試験に関する、新聞広告ですが、右上の図では、ウィルスは細菌よりもずっと小さいものだけしかいないということになっています。おそらく、試験作成者の知識は、２０世紀時点のままで、更新されていないのだと思います。この試験の内容は大丈夫か、と思ってしまいます。
Semantics of Viruses or The Health Care Provider Exam.
This is a sentence written on the obi of a book titled "The Semantics of Viruses: Existence Beyond the Definition of Life" by Kazuya Yamauchi, Misuzu Shobo, 2018 (image quoted from Amazon.com).
An existence that transcends the definition of life. Its life and death are somehow different from those of living things. It is replicated from a parent that has been decomposed, revived even after being destroyed, abandoned its body, incubated as information, and suddenly materialized.
Viruses are mysterious beings that may or may not be living things. Perhaps it is better to think of them as an existence that straddles the line between living and non-living things. Or perhaps it would be better to boldly define them as a form of "information".
By the way, in this book, there is a description of a giant virus found in the 2010s.
The table above is taken from "The Semantics of Viruses". The fourth from the bottom, Pandoravirus, is 1000 nanometers (1 micrometer) in size. The third from the bottom, Pythovirus, is 1,500 nanometers (1.5 micrometers) in size. Until the 20th century, it was thought that bacteria were micrometers in size, while viruses were at most nanometers in size. We now know that this is not necessarily true.
However, if you search the Internet, you will find that many articles say that viruses are much smaller than bacteria.
The image above is a newspaper advertisement for the Health Care Professional exam, and the diagram on the upper right shows that viruses are only much smaller than bacteria. Perhaps the knowledge of the test creators is still in the 20th century and has not been updated. It makes me wonder if the content of this exam is safe.
