【英訳】侏儒の言葉32：奴隷
本稿は芥川龍之介『侏儒の言葉』を英訳してみようという、連続企画です。もともと日本文学の作品を英語やドイツ語などの外国語で読みなおすのが好きだったのですが、芥川龍之介でいちばんお気に入りのこの作品には翻訳が見当たらなかったのがこの企画を思い立ったきっかけです。

Slavery
The abolition of slavery merely means that you stop seeing yourself as a slave. It seems that our society is unable to secure its safety even for one single day without slaves. As a matter of fact, the republic that Plato conceived of presupposes the existence of slaves, which is not necessarily a coincidence.
Or,
It must have been dangerous to call a tyrant ‘a tyrant’, but today, even more than in the case of tyrant, you see it is also quite dangerous to call a slave ‘a slave’.
奴隷
奴隷廃止ということはただ奴隷たる自意識を廃止するということである。われわれの社会は奴隷なしには一日も安全を保し難いらしい。現にあのプラトオンの共和国さえ、奴隷の存在を予想しているのは必ずしも偶然ではないのである。
又
暴君を暴君と呼ぶことは危険だったのに違いない。が、今日は暴君以上に奴隷を奴隷と呼ぶこともやはりはなはだ危険である。
