This Week’s Global News

1. France – Energy Strikes Disrupt LNG

On October 1, workers at France’s Dunkirk LNG terminal launched a strike, forcing operator Fluxys to declare force majeure. Other French LNG facilities also reported disruptions. Europe enters the winter with solid storage levels, but the incident underlines how vulnerable energy supply chains remain.

2. United States – Government Shutdown Begins

The U.S. government officially shut down on October 1 after Congress failed to pass a new budget. About 750,000 federal employees are now furloughed, while key agencies including the Labor Department and Census Bureau have suspended operations. This is the first shutdown since 2018.

3. United States & Israel – Gaza Peace Plan

On September 29, President Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu presented a 20-point “comprehensive peace plan” for Gaza. It includes a ceasefire, release of hostages, Hamas disarmament, phased Israeli withdrawal, and the deployment of an international stabilization force. Hamas was excluded from negotiations, making the plan controversial.

4. United States – Private Payrolls Decline

The ADP employment report, published October 1, showed that private payrolls fell by 32,000 in September—the sharpest decline since 2023. With official government statistics delayed by the shutdown, private sector surveys like ADP’s are becoming critical indicators of the U.S. economy.

5. United States – Dollar Weakens

The U.S. dollar fell on October 1 after weak labor data and the shutdown shook investor confidence. Treasury yields slipped as bond prices rose. Analysts say expectations of future Fed rate cuts are pressuring the dollar, which could reshape global trade and commodity markets.

6. European Union – Steel Tariffs Proposal

The European Union is preparing to tighten rules on steel imports. Reports indicate Brussels may slash import quotas and impose tariffs of up to 50% on excess shipments starting in 2025. The move aims to protect EU industry but risks sparking new trade disputes.
