屋久島に住んで思ったこと①

初めまして以前に屋久島に住んでいたkenです。

屋久島の歩き方

〜島で暮らして感じた「買い物事情」〜

今は大阪でWeb制作やデザインの仕事をしていますが、屋久島で過ごした時間は、今でも自分の中で特別な思い出です。

屋久島というと、

「世界遺産の島」
「縄文杉」
「もののけ姫の森」

そんなイメージを持つ人が多いと思います。

もちろん、その印象は間違っていません。

朝の澄んだ空気、雨上がりの森の匂い、海沿いを走る道路から見える山々。

ただ車を走らせているだけでも、自然のスケールに圧倒される島でした。

一方で、実際に暮らしてみると、都会とは違う“島ならではの生活”があります。

その一つが「買い物事情」です。

屋久島には大型ショッピングモールのような施設は少なく、地域によっては商店もかなり限られています。

特に東側エリアで地元の人たちに親しまれているのが「Aコープ」。

営業時間は9:00〜19:00。
（季節によって少し変わることもあります）

屋久島空港からは車で約15分前後。
飛行機で到着したあと、食料品や飲み物をまとめて買う人も多いです。

また、高速船やフェリーが発着する「安房港」からは車で約3〜5分ほど。
港からかなり近いため、登山客や旅行者が最初に立ち寄るスーパーとしても有名でした。

一方、屋久島最大の港である「宮之浦港」からは車で約25〜30分ほど。
島の北側から東側へ海沿いを走っていくルートで、途中には山や海の景色が広がり、「屋久島に来たな」と感じるドライブになります。

地元の人だけでなく、観光客や移住者にとっても欠かせない存在です。

食料品、飲み物、タバコ、お酒、日用品など、大抵のものはここで揃います。

「とりあえずAコープへ行けば何とかなる」

これは屋久島生活あるあるかもしれません。

しかも最近はPayPayなどのキャッシュレス決済にも対応していて、意外と便利です。

店舗の近くにはATMもあり、生活インフラとしてかなり助けられていました。

ただ、島ならではだなと感じたのは“品切れ”です。

特に昼時になると、お弁当やお惣菜コーナーはかなり人気で、タイミングが遅いと売り切れていることもあります。

登山客や観光客が多いシーズンは特に早いです。

そして屋久島らしさを最も感じるのが、台風や大雨の時。

屋久島は天候の影響を受けやすく、連絡船（輸送船）が欠航すると、一気に物資が入りにくくなります。

パン、カップ麺、飲料水、牛乳などが少なくなり、スーパーの棚が少しずつ空いていく。

都会ではなかなか見ない光景でした。

最初は驚きましたが、暮らしていくうちに、

「必要なものは早めに買っておく」
「天気予報をちゃんと見る」

そんな島ならではの感覚が自然と身についていきました。

でも、不思議とその不便さが嫌ではありませんでした。

便利すぎないからこそ、人との距離が近い。

レジで顔を覚えられたり、地元の人と天気の話をしたり。

自然の中で生活している感覚が、毎日の中にちゃんとありました。

旅行で訪れるだけでは見えない“暮らしの屋久島”。

Walking Through Yakushima

~What I Learned About Shopping and Daily Life on the Island~

I now work in Osaka doing web design and creative projects, but the time I spent living on Yakushima is still one of the most special memories of my life.

When people hear the name Yakushima, they often imagine:

• “A World Heritage island”

• “Jomon Sugi cedar tree”

• “The forest that inspired Princess Mononoke”

And honestly, those images are not wrong at all.

The clear morning air, the smell of the forest after the rain, and the mountains visible from the coastal roads — even simply driving around the island felt overwhelming in the best possible way.

But once you actually live there, you begin to notice another side of Yakushima: the unique rhythm of island life that is very different from living in a big city.

One of the biggest differences is shopping and daily supplies.

Yakushima does not have many large shopping malls or commercial centers, and depending on the area, local stores can be quite limited.

In the eastern area of the island, one of the supermarkets most loved by locals is A-Coop.

Business hours are usually from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, although this may change slightly depending on the season.

It is about a 15-minute drive from Yakushima Airport, so many visitors stop there to buy groceries and drinks after arriving by plane.

The store is also located only about 3–5 minutes by car from Anbo Port, where ferries and high-speed boats arrive and depart. Because of its convenient location, it became one of the first supermarkets many hikers and travelers visit after arriving on the island.

On the other hand, it takes about 25–30 minutes by car from Miyanoura Port, the island’s largest port. The drive along the coastline from the north side to the east side of Yakushima offers beautiful views of mountains and the sea, making you truly feel, “I’ve arrived in Yakushima.”

A-Coop is essential not only for local residents, but also for tourists and people who have moved to the island.

You can find almost everything there:

• groceries

• drinks

• cigarettes

• alcohol

• daily necessities

People on Yakushima often say:

“If you go to A-Coop, somehow everything will work out.”

That may be one of the classic “Yakushima lifestyle” sayings.

Surprisingly, the store also supports cashless payments like PayPay, which makes life more convenient than many people expect.

There is even an ATM nearby, making it an important part of the island’s daily infrastructure.

However, one thing that really felt unique to island life was how quickly products could sell out.

Especially around lunchtime, the prepared meals and lunch boxes are extremely popular. If you arrive too late, many items may already be gone.

During hiking and tourist seasons, things disappear even faster.

And perhaps the moment when you feel “this is truly Yakushima” the most is during typhoons and heavy rain.

Yakushima is heavily affected by weather conditions, and when cargo ships or ferries are canceled, supplies can suddenly become difficult to obtain.

Bread, instant noodles, bottled water, milk — little by little, the supermarket shelves start becoming empty.

It was a scene I had rarely seen while living in the city.

At first, it surprised me.

But over time, I naturally adapted to island life:

• buying essentials early

• checking weather forecasts carefully

• preparing before storms arrive

These habits slowly became normal.

And strangely enough, I never hated the inconvenience.

Because life was not overly convenient, people felt closer to each other.

Cashiers remembered your face.
Locals casually talked about the weather.
You could truly feel that you were living within nature every single day.

There is a side of Yakushima you cannot fully experience as just a tourist.

If you ever visit the island, I recommend stopping by local supermarkets and small shops as well.

There, you can discover the everyday life of Yakushima beyond the famous tourist spots.
