The murals of St. Peter’s Basilica. Looking up from below, they seem like magnificent paintings, but upon climbing to the top of the basilica, they turned out to be a collection of tiny fragments of crushed tiles. Since they are made of cast material, they never fade. The greatness of beauty as an accumulation of countless pieces—truly astonishing. Human talent and effort are remarkable, but I was once again struck by the power of art to move people’s hearts.
