Hospital Diary 6 – The Surgery Is Over, But the Real Challenge Begins – June 26, 2026 (Fri) Reiwa8

Yesterday, my surgery was originally scheduled for 1:00 p.m., but it was delayed until 3:00 p.m. and finally ended around 6:30 p.m.

The anesthesia was still working well, so I felt almost no pain. I even thought, "Maybe this won't be so bad," and fell asleep.

Then, around midnight, I woke up with severe pain.

The oral pain medicine hardly worked. Eventually, the nurse gave me a pain-relief suppository, and the pain eased enough for me to doze off again.

By early morning, the pain had returned.

Unfortunately, the suppository could only be used once every 12 hours, so I had to wait.

I welcomed the morning while still in pain.

Breakfast was my first meal in almost a full day.

It included toast with jam, a small vegetable side dish, fruit, and milk.

I don't really like milk, but because I have osteoporosis, I tell myself it is part of my "training."

Today, milk was the only drink available, so I couldn't finish it all at once. I drank it little by little and finally finished it before eating the fruit.

After breakfast, the nurse even instructed me to brush my teeth.

I realized that keeping the mouth clean is also an important part of preventing infection after surgery.

The hospital pays attention to every small detail to help patients recover.

The biggest surprise for me was the pain.

I had always thought, "Bones don't have many pain nerves, so maybe a broken bone itself doesn't hurt that much."

I was completely wrong.

The membrane covering the bone, along with the surrounding muscles, blood vessels, and tendons, is injured by both the fracture and the surgery. These tissues become inflamed, causing significant pain.

One of the nurses told me, "Patients with broken bones always tell us how painful it is."

Becoming a patient has taught me many things I never knew before.

This afternoon, I will begin walking practice.

The doctor also told me to start by moving my wrist and doing gentle pendulum exercises with my arm.

I had surgery only yesterday, and rehabilitation has already begun.

Recovery is not just about resting.

It is about gradually moving again, one step at a time.
