New Zealand Travel 38 Day 9–5 A Day Protecting My Grandchildren and Other Children — Organizing My Thoughts
Today, I took care of my two grandchildren for the first time in a while, as my son and his wife went to a cousin’s wedding. At first, things were calm, but outside, the three children became very excited while playing on the trampoline. Even after coming indoors, the 7-year-old grandchild began a dangerous game of jumping from high places, and the 5-year-old grandchild was also drawn into it.
Furthermore, a 4-year-old boy, the child of my daughter-in-law’s sister, who was fragile, was at risk of being caught up in the situation. He had come to play with his grandmother, my daughter-in-law’s mother. I felt responsible and acted instantly to prevent any danger. At that moment, the 7-year-old grandchild cried, and the 5-year-old glared at me.
The person who witnessed my actions was my daughter-in-law’s mother. She reported to my daughter-in-law that my actions might be considered “abuse.” I thought that would settle the matter. However, the issue became a discussion between my son and daughter-in-law, with debates over whether what I did was abuse or whether I had acted with care. Even my daughter-in-law’s mother initially said it was abuse, but later in the discussion, she acknowledged that I had done well. The situation shifted back and forth, leaving everything unclear.
I considered taking a flight back, but I am unsure if I can get a ticket. I also have no way to reach Queenstown, and there is no taxi service, so I am unsure what to do. Inside, I feel a mixture of fatigue and frustration.
Still, my purpose was clear. It was to protect my two grandchildren and the children who might have been in danger. It was difficult to manage everything without anyone getting hurt, but I believe I did my best.
Writing down today’s events in my notebook helps me organize my thoughts and regain some calm. All the anger, fear, and exhaustion are recorded as part of the day. I am reminded once again of how much patience child-rearing requires.
