A Little Cleaner Fish Brightened My Day — Meeting the Bluestreak Cleaner Wrasse —July 25, 2026 (Saturday) Reiwa8

On my way back from dinner today, I stopped in front of the tropical fish tank for the first time in a long while.

Since breaking my arm, I had been so focused on pain, rehabilitation, and hospital visits that I had almost forgotten how relaxing it is to watch fish swim.

One small fish immediately caught my attention.

It was a Bluestreak Cleaner Wrasse.

Its colors were not flashy, but it swam incredibly fast. Although it was one of the smallest fish in the tank, it moved so quickly and gracefully that I couldn't take my eyes off it.

As I watched, I found myself thinking,

"I hope I can move that freely again someday."

Curious about the fish, I looked it up.

I learned that it is famous as a cleaner fish, feeding on parasites and leftover food from the bodies, mouths, and even the gills of larger fish.

At first, I wondered if the larger fish disliked being cleaned.

To my surprise, they actually benefit from it. The two species live in a mutually beneficial relationship, helping each other survive.

Another fascinating fact was its social life.

One male lives with several females. If the male disappears, the strongest female changes sex and becomes the new male.

Nature is far more diverse and creative than I had ever imagined.

I was also amazed to learn that this tiny fish has shown evidence of recognizing its own reflection in a mirror. Even such a small creature may possess a level of intelligence that we are only beginning to understand.

Today, a little cleaner fish reminded me how wonderful the natural world is.

More importantly, it reminded me that I can once again slow down, observe, and enjoy the small miracles around me.

I think I'll be looking for this little fish every time I walk past the aquarium.
