The Blue Danube Was a Song of Hope — A CD I Found in the Rehabilitation Room — July 26, 2026 (Sunday) Reiwa8

Today, I picked up an old CD from the rehabilitation room titled Karajan in His Younger Years – Waltz Collection.

No one seemed to be borrowing the CDs anymore. They were quietly stacked on a shelf. Since I do not have a CD player, I searched for The Blue Danube on YouTube and listened to it there.

The music was exactly as I remembered it—bright, graceful, and refreshing.

Then I learned something that surprised me.

Johann Strauss II composed this famous waltz in 1867, shortly after Austria's defeat in the Austro-Prussian War. It was written to encourage people who had been deeply discouraged by the war.

It was not simply a beautiful dance piece.

It was music created to help people look forward again, even after experiencing sorrow.

I also learned that The Blue Danube is still performed every year at the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert. It has become a symbol of hope and a joyful beginning for people around the world.

Knowing the story behind the music completely changed the way I heard it.

Today, I realized that great art is more than something beautiful. It quietly asks us what gives us strength and where we choose to go in life.

If I had never started rehabilitation, I would never have found this forgotten CD.

A single CD, left quietly on a shelf, taught me about history, music, and the enduring power of hope.

Next time, I would like to listen to the other four pieces on the album, one by one.
