The Day I Chose My Future Self While Choosing My Clothes — 2026/4/21 (Tue) R8

Even though my body felt tired and I wanted to lie down, I began tidying up today.
The first thing I worked on was my medicine.
I separated the pills I must take every day from the ones I keep on hand, and counted them.
I may not be able to visit a hospital for a while, so I started by putting my daily foundation in order.
Next came the clothes.
My husband told me to “pack them into boxes,” and I tried to sort them into spring, summer, autumn, and winter, but it turned out to be strangely difficult.
Many of them could belong to any season, and in the end, I felt unsure how to divide them.
Then I realized something.
This was not about sorting by seasons.
It was about sorting by whether they still fit the person I will be from now on.
Clothes I had not worn for a long time.
Clothes I probably will not wear again.
And yet, clothes I had once happily chosen.
Sixty-seven years of time seemed to be woven into the fabric.
Even as I hesitated, small spaces began to appear in the closet.
I did not try to do too much at once. Today was my second “big round.”
I will look through everything once more tomorrow, in time for Wednesday’s garbage collection.
What remained were comfortable shirts, T-shirts, and pants.
And two dresses that I simply could not let go of.
A winter dress with a floral pattern.
A slightly subdued dress with polka dots.
They feel less like clothes and more like something that gently restores my spirit.
I also hesitated over a suit.
But then I realized: I no longer wish for a way of working that requires me to wear a suit.
I do not want to go out at night.
I do not want to force myself into a way of living that no longer suits me.
So I decided to leave it behind.
As I chose my medicine, chose my clothes,
and remembered small items like hangers and nail clippers, checking each one carefully,
I felt that today,
I was not simply reducing my belongings,
but quietly choosing the shape of the person I will be from now on.
Time for a short rest.
This is more than enough for today.
