A Single Receipt Found in the Early Morning ― Relief and the Importance of OrganizationSunday, August 2, 2026 (Reiwa 8)

I woke up at 3:30 in the morning.

I did not feel like going back to sleep, so I started working on something that had been on my mind for a long time: preparing a medical expense claim for the retired mutual aid association. I gathered receipts for medical expenses of more than 5,000 yen from each hospital, made copies, and prepared them to send to Shizuoka.

Since moving to Matsuyama, I have visited around nine hospitals, including hospitals to which I was referred. Before my fracture, I thought, “I can organize everything later.” However, after the fall, fracture, hospitalization, surgery, rehabilitation, and insurance claim procedures, many unexpected events happened one after another.

The most stressful moment was when I could not find the receipt for my surgery at the Japanese Red Cross Hospital. After searching for a long time, I finally remembered that I had copied it for my insurance claim with Dai-ichi Life and had placed it in the insurance documents folder. The moment I found it, I finally felt a great sense of relief.

When I lived in Shizuoka, I had a system: I separated my husband’s and my receipts and filed them by hospital. I rarely had problems. However, after moving to a new place, I thought I would not have many medical expenses and could organize things later. Then the unexpected fracture happened, and everything became overwhelming.

This experience reminded me that living alone means taking responsibility not only for health management but also for documents, finances, and many small details of daily life.

The retired mutual aid association requires me to make copies of receipts and submit an application myself. It takes time and effort, and the amount returned is not always large. However, I believe it is meaningful to use a system that I have belonged to for many years.

From now on, I want to organize documents by hospital and by purpose, and develop the habit of putting things away on the same day. By doing so, I can make life easier for my future self.

The single receipt that I finally found in the early morning did more than simply bring me relief. It taught me an important lesson:

Organization is a way of helping the future version of myself.
