What Does Rehabilitation Really Mean? ー July 27, 2026 R8
It has now been about one month since my surgery for a fracture of my left upper arm.
When I first broke the bone, I was told that keeping my arm still was very important. However, at my follow-up appointment, the doctor looked at my X-rays and said, “You can stop using the sling now. Start moving your shoulder before it becomes stiff.”
That was the moment I became confused.
The bone needs to be protected so it can heal. At the same time, if the shoulder is not moved, it becomes stiff. Where is the balance between protecting the bone and starting rehabilitation?
Doctors can make that decision by looking at X-rays. But as a patient, I cannot see what they see. Every day I wonder, “Is it safe to move this far?” or “Is this pain a normal part of recovery, or am I pushing too hard?”
A physical therapist at Eden introduced me to several rehabilitation exercises with a stick, and I practice them every day. Some movements are manageable, while others are painful. I keep asking myself whether I am doing them correctly.
Today I visited an orthopedic clinic. After another X-ray, the doctor told me that I might be referred to a physician and a physical therapist who have more experience treating patients after shoulder surgery.
Hearing that gave me some peace of mind.
I have started to think that rehabilitation is more than simply exercising. It is a process of listening to my body, checking how the bone is healing, learning from experienced professionals, and moving forward one step at a time.
I do not want to rush. But I do not want to stop, either.
Today, once again, I will continue taking one small step forward.
