英語学習: 似た意味の単語の正しい使い分け ashamed vs embarrassed, alternate vs alternative

この投稿では同じような意味の単語における、正しい使い方をご紹介します。
Common Mistakesという形で取り上げられる英語の間違いあるある的な内容です。
今回は"ashamed vs embarrassed" と "alternate" vs "alternative"をご案内します。

ashamed vs embarrassed
何か悪いことしちゃったな、などの場合にはashamedを使います。
例: You should be ashamed of treating your daughter like that.

但しその行った事が重要な事柄、或いはシリアスな場合には使いません。
例: 牛乳買うの忘れてしまった。(重要な買い物だったのに忘れた)
Correct: I am sorry that I forgot to buy the milk.
Wrong : I am ashamed that I forgot to buy the milk.

これに対しembarrassedは人に見られて恥ずかしい、人前で恥ずかしいことをしてしまった、という感じで使います。
He felt embarrassed at being the centre of attention.
He's embarrassed about his weight.
I was embarrassed about forgetting his name when speaking.

alternate vs alternative
alternateは完全に"代わり"という意味で使います。これに対しalternativeは元々のアイディアもある、別の手段もある、という感じで使います。
When a road undergoing maintenance is closed to traffic, you have to take an alternate route.
道路が工事で完全に封鎖、別のルートを探すしかない状況、この場合はalternateです.

When an under-construction road is still accessible to traffic, you might choose to take an alternative route to avoid congestion.
建設中の道路を通ること、或いは渋滞を避け別のルートを通ること、2つの手段がある状況ではalternativeです.

alternative energyという言葉を聞いたことがあると思います。ソーラーや風力など通常の電力に代わるものとなりますが、通常の電力が活用でき、さらなる選択としてのenergyですのでalternativeとなります。

余談ですが、"代"と"替"では意味や使用目的が微妙に異なるようですが、"代替"と、この2つを一緒にした言葉もあって......ニホンゴムズカシイネ.
