英語学習: 20 British English Idioms --イギリス英語のイディオム20例

この投稿では、British EnglishにおけるIdiomをいくつかご紹介します。
Idiomは相当な数があり全てを覚えることは無理です。Nativeすら覚えていません。
以下はよく使用されると言われているものをピックアップしてみました。
出来るだけ日頃から使えるようなものを選んだつもりです......

1 break the ice
意味: 場を和ます、口火を切って会話を始めるなど.
サンプル: I told everyone a joke, which helped to break the ice.

2 burn the midnight oil
意味: 夜遅くまで仕事すること.
サンプル: I’ve been burning the midnight oil to finish this project before the deadline.

3 bite the bullet
意味: "仕方ない、やるしかないか"なんて時に使います.
サンプル: It's time to bite the bullet and try to sort out this problem.

4 call it a day
意味: 今日は/今は、ここまで！という感じに使います.
サンプル: It's 8 PM now. Let’s call it a day and continue tomorrow.

5 cut corners
意味: (悪い意味で)物事を簡単に済ます、お金を掛けずに済ます、という意味です
サンプル: The company cut corners on safety to save money, which, in the end, caused problems.

6 cost/pay an arm and a leg
意味: 値段が高い時に使います
サンプル: New iPhone costs an arm and a leg, I can’t afford now.

7 hit the nail on the head
意味: 物事を正確に表現している、という意味です
サンプル: You’ve hit the nail on the head with your idea about the problem.

8 jump on the bandwagon
意味: 流行に乗っかる、という感じです
サンプル: When healthy eating became popular, many people jumped on the bandwagon.

9 kill two birds with one stone
意味: ことわざの”一石二鳥”です
サンプル: By walking to work, I kill two birds with one stone: I save money and get exercise.

10 let the cat out of the bag
意味: 誤って秘密をばらしちゃったという感じです
サンプル: I let the cat out of the bag about the surprise party when I asked her what cake she likes.

11 like two peas in a pod
意味: 人や物が非常に良く似ている、という意味です
サンプル: My sister and I are like two peas in a pod. We aren't twins, but everybody misunderstands

12 once in a blue moon
意味: 滅多にない、しない、という時に使います.
サンプル: I only eat Ramen once in a blue moon, I usually eat Soba.

13 take (something) with a pinch of salt
意味: 信用できない、怪しい、という表現です
サンプル: I always take SNS with a pinch of salt, They steal our information.

14 ten/two a penny (USでは a dime a dozen)
意味: 一般的過ぎてあまり」価値がないという表現です
サンプル: Antique toy cars are ten a penny nowadays.

15 under the weather
意味: ちょっと体の調子が悪いという表現です
サンプル: "I’m feeling a bit under the weather today." "You'd better stay home and rest."

16 miss the boat
意味: チャンスを逃すという意味です
サンプル: Don’t miss the boat! You can play in Premier League.

17 It’s not rocket science
意味: そんなに難しくない、という表現です
サンプル: You just need to restart your laptop, it’s not rocket science.

18 Go the extra mile 
意味: さらに/もっと努力する、という意味です
サンプル: Otani always goes the extra mile to help his team win.

19 sit on the fence
意味: 1つの事柄に2つの(対立的な)意見がある際に使います
サンプル: The two countries are often on opposite sides of the fence when it comes to climate change.

20 At the drop of a hat
意味: 何も考えず突発的に、という表現です
サンプル: Trump always says something on SNS at the drop of a hat.
