英語学習: ニュースにおける英語の独特な使い方 -- News English --

この投稿ではNews English -- ニュースにおける英語の独特な使い方-- につき要点をご紹介したいと思います。ニュース英語とはいえ、ニュース番組でキャスターが読み上げる際の英語ではなく、ヘッドラインやテロップ(注1)で使われる文字としての英語が主になります。

因みに私は日頃BBCとCNNがTVで見たり、ネットではBBCをよく利用しています。
YoutubeでもSky Newsなどをライブで見ることが出来るので時折閲覧しています。

1.Present Simpleの使い方
今現時点で起きていること、事実、真実などを伝える場合や、直近、或いは昨日などの過去に起きた出来事でも過去の出来事についてPserent Simpleを用いることをHistoric Presentと呼びNews Englishにおいても重要なポイントになります。
・Government approves new tax plan (過去のことを今として伝えている)
・Company announces major layoffs (過去のことを今として伝えている)
・Inflation remains high (今起きていること)
・Japan faces labour shortages (同上きていること)

また既にスケジュール化されている事柄でもPresent Simpleを使います。
・The President arrives next week.
・Talks begin on Monday.

2.Past Simpleの使い方
Past Simpleは既に完了した行動や出来事を伝える際に、それらの完了した時間等がはっきりしている場合に使います。
・The earthquake hit the region at 3:42 a.m.
・Police arrested three suspects on Monday.
・The company reported losses last quarter

3. Present Perfectの使い方
過去の行動や出来事が何かの形で現在にも継続されている場合や、出来事の結果を時間よりも重視している場合に使います。
・The government has approved a new security law.
・Several countries have raised travel warnings.
・The storm has caused widespread damage.

4.To be動詞を省く
・PM invited to Washington. (The Prime Minister has been invited).
・Prices up again. (Prices are up again.)

5.willやbe going toを省く
・Chancellor to announce tax cuts(The Chancellor will announce them).
・Mayor to visit Paris. (The mayor is going to visit Paris.)

6.名詞を形容詞としても使用する
・Hospital bed shortage crisis. (A crisis regarding the shortage of beds in hospital.)

7.A, an, theを省く
・Man rescues cat from blaze. (A man rescued a cat from a fire).
・Storm hits coast. (A storm has hit the coast.)

8.ニュースで使われるIdioms
・Behind closed doors
・こっそり何かすること。
・The deal was brokered behind closed doors in that room.

・At the eleventh hour
・残り1分のところで、ような表現
・A strike was averted at the eleventh hour following late-night talks.

・A drop in the ocean (US: a drop in the bucket)
・日本語の焼け石に水
・Critics say the £5 million investment is just a drop in the ocean.

・On the brink of
・今にも起きる、発生する、という表現
・The firm was on the brink of collapse.

・In the spotlight
・注目を集めているという表現
・The actor is in the spotlight again.

・A wake-up call
・何かのアクションが必要だという警告として使用
・The report was a wake-up call for leaders.

(注1): テロップ/Telopについて
余談ですが、テロップ、TELevision Opaque Projectorの略ですが、どうもJapanglishのようです。一応英語でも同じような使い方をしていいた感もありますが、今では主流ではない模様です。

Lower thirds(-graphic) (news captions)
Subtitles
Captioning
Text overlay
となるようで、YoutubeでもSubtitlesが使われていますね。
