Why Do I Write? — To Meet Myself
To be honest, I’ve never truly understood who I am.
Ever since I was a kid, I’ve struggled with consistency.
Journals? Never lasted more than a few days.
But when it comes to moments that really matter,
I seem to have this surprising burst of energy.
Thanks to that, I’ve somehow hopped my way through life—like jumping across stepping stones.
Now, I’m nearing the end of my 50s.
And I realize something:
There’s barely any record of my journey.
No diary, no memoir, no written trail of where I’ve been.
Wait... is that okay?
Did I take it too easy?
Just as I started wondering, this writing challenge appeared like a comet.
Thank you, Ken Honda,
for always bringing light and hope into the world.
I still remember being the only kid in class who couldn’t do a back hip circle on the bar. Everyone laughed. I was devastated.
After school, as the sun was setting, I stayed behind and practiced alone.
I tried so hard. But no matter how much I practiced, I never could do it.
Looking back, I wish I had asked for help. I wish I had let someone guide me—someone who knew how to teach gently and well.
That’s why this time, I’m doing things differently.
Like birds who follow the lead of their strongest flier,
I’ll follow Ken’s wide, steady wings.
With that guidance, I’ll spread my own wings and write.
Write to face myself.
Write to move forward.
This is my first step.
Today is the day I set sail.
I celebrate this new beginning.
