After nine years of publication, Heeb will cease publication of its print magazine. Its online edition will continue to be updated, editor Joshua Neuman writes in a note to the readers, which is titled “So Much for Controlling the Media.” He keeps it upbeat in his goodbye letter, though, saying “we’re hardly just ‘throwing in the shmatte.'”
Heeb Magazine has never been about making Jewish “cool.” What we are big believers in, however, is making Jewish fun. We believe that in a world in which Jewish periodicals outdo themselves in attempting to highlight just how endangered Jews are, there should be one Jewish media outlet that actually makes its readers smile. So whether online, or in print, we like to think that we can all still have a little fun—and don’t worry, Ahmadinejad will still be waiting when we’re done.
Erin Hershberg will helm Heebmagazine.com, which will continue to feature coverage of world events, cultural commentary, and “countless photos of scantily-clad Israeli models.” But the print edition will be missed. Heeb—or, as it is fondly called, the New Jew Review—was a great place for irreverent and smart writing, regardless of whether you’re a Jew or a Gentile. And where else could you possibly find a spread of Roseanne Barr in Nazi drag?
