Bright Young Things

Bright Young Things[1] ou Bright Young People[2] (Jovens Brilhantes, em tradução livre) ou ainda, no mundo lusófono, Loucos e Decadentes[3] foi um termo cunhado pela imprensa sensacionalista para se referir a um grupo de jovens boêmios de classe alta britânica nas décadas de 1920 e 1930.[4] Seus integrantes eram fascinados por jazz e corridas automobilísticas, além de levarem uma vida marcada por excessos, como o consumo de álcool e drogas ilícitas. Também advogavam ou eram adeptos de comportamentos considerados tabus na época, incluindo a emancipação feminina, a liberdade sexual (incluindo homossexualidade),[5] e o pacifismo.[6][7][8] Costumavam frequentar festas extravagantes à fantasia, bem como bares, clubes e casa noturnas de Londres, onde passavam a noite dançando e bebendo até o amanhecer, atraindo a atenção constante de jornalistas e da imprensa rosa.
Demasiado jovens para lutarem na Primeira Guerra Mundial, essa geração da década conhecida como os loucos anos vinte (Roaring Twenties) teve seu comportamento considerado "selvagem" interpretado como uma reação tanto aos valores conservadores de seus pais e da Grã-Bretanha do período pré-guerra quanto às dificuldades políticas, sociais e econômicas que marcaram o pós-guerra.[6][nota 1]
Membros proeminentes do grupo incluíam socialites como as irmãs Mitford, Lady Diana Cooper, o aristocrata Stephen Tennant, o esteta Harold Acton, o ator Noël Coward, o fotógrafo Cecil Beaton, o romancista Christopher Isherwood, o poeta Brian Howard, o historiador A. J. P. Taylor, o economista Hugh Dalton, o produtor de rádio e espião soviético Guy Burgess, futuros primeiros-ministros do Reino Unido (Clement Attlee, Anthony Eden, Alec Douglas-Home e Harold Wilson) e integrantes da família real britânica (o Príncipe de Gales (o futuro Rei Eduardo VIII), Lorde Mountbatten, o Duque de Kent e Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon – mãe da futura Rainha Elizabeth II).
Diversas personalidades do grupo inspiraram personagens em romances escritos por outros integrantes, como Evelyn Waugh, Anthony Powell e Nancy Mitford,[11] e influenciaram o cenário social, cultural, político e econômico da Grã-Bretanha ao longo do século XX. Mais recentemente, o grupo foi tema de canções de Marilyn Manson (2003)[12] e Albert Hammond Jr. (2006),[13] além das bandas Pet Shop Boys (2012)[14] e ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead (2012).[15] Também foi tema do filme Bright Young Things (2003), produzido por Stephen Fry,[16] e mencionado em séries como Downton Abbey (2010-2015)[nota 2] e Peaky Blinders (2013-2022).[17]
