"The dreaded question. "So, what's your Ph.D. research about?" You could bore them with an explanation. Or you could dance."

That's the idea behind "Dance Your Ph.D." Over the past 3 years, scientists from around the world have teamed up to create dance videos based on their graduate research. This year's contest, launched in June by Science, received 45 brave submissions.

Today, judges—including scientists, choreographers, and past winners—announced the finalists in four categories: physics, chemistry, biology, and social sciences. Each receives $500.

The judges will announce the winner next month at the Imagine Science Film Festival in New York City. But you can vote for your favorite now. We'll reveal the victor—and our reader pick—on 19 October.

http://news.sciencemag.org/sciencenow/2010/09/dance-your-phd-finalists-announce.html

Below are my two favorite videos, but I love them all!

<lj-embed id="102" />

<lj-embed id="103" />

Come on down and visit us at our Zenkaikon/Delaware Anime Society Booth to play video games, enter a cosplay contest, or just say hi!

http://jasgp.org/cherryblossomfestival/index.php/Featured-Events/Sakura-Sunday-2010.html

This spring, from March 5 - April 17, Philadelphia's beautiful flowering trees will come into bloom for the Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival of Greater Philadelphia. A program of the Japan America Society of Greater Philadephia, the Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival of Grea...ter Philadelphia is an initiative to encourage a better understanding of the cultural, social, and educational customs of Japan and the United States. For hundreds of years, Japan has been celebrating the beauty of the elegant pink cherry blossom with picnics under the trees accompanied by traditional music and dance. Set under the blossoming canopy of Philadelphia’s cherry trees, our Festival is a chance to experience a centuries-old tradition that celebrates the fleeting splendor of spring like no other. Join tens of thousands in savoring the fruits of Japan’s rich cultural heritage before the flowers fall! The Festival benefits the JASGP Community Tree Planting Project, which seeks to beautify the Philadelphia landscape by annually planting and maintaining cherry trees in Philadelphia parks. In the spring of 2007, the JASGP finished planting 1,000 cherry trees to supplement the 1,600 flowering trees donated by Japanese government as a gesture of friendship in 1926. The 2010 Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival will span from March 5 to April 17, with the centerpiece event of the Festival - SAKURA SUNDAY - taking place on April 11th in Fairmount Park's Horticulture Center. Be part of a centuries-old tradition as we bring together the best in Japanese art, cuisine, dance, fashion, flowers, music and much more! Dozo, oide kudasai! We look forward to seeing you.

Origin of Species Drinking Gama

From a mailing list I'm on:

"A former student alerted me to the following (source is the Feb. 12, 2009
[Darwin Day] post on http://capacioushandbag.blogspot.com/):

I just invented the Origin of Species drinking game. Each player has to read
out a whole sentence from the book without stopping for breath. If they
can't do it, they take a swig and try the next sentence instead. If they
can, the book passes to the next player. It'll go like this:

Player 1: "Finally, then, I conclude that the greater variability of
specific characters, or those which distinguish species from species, than
of generic characters, or those which are possessed by all the species; that
the frequent extreme variability of any part which is developed in a species
in an extraordinary manner in comparison with the same part in its
congeners; and the slight degree of variability in a part, however
extraordinarily it may be developed, if it be common to a whole group of
species; that the great variability of secondary sexual characters and their
great difference in closely allied species; that secondary sexual and
ordinary specific differences are generally displayed in the same parts of
the organisation, are all..."
(Drink)
"All being mainly due to the species of the same group being the descendants
of a common progenitor, from whom they have inherited much in common, to
parts which have recently and largely varied being more likely still to go
on varying than parts which have long been inherited and have not varied, to
natural selection having more or less completely, according to the lapse of
time, overmastered the tendency to reversion and to further variability, to
sexual selection being less rigid than ordinary selection, and to variations
in the same parts having been accumulated by natural and sexual selection,
and thus having been adapted for secondary sexual, and.."
(Drink)

Let me know if you try it and survive."
