Guests were a feature which allowed unregistered players to test the Roblox platform without a formal account. The feature was first introduced on September 26, 2008[1] and officially removed for PC users on October 2, 2017.[2]

Despite its official removal, players could still access the platform as guests on mobile and PC through various exploits[3] Most of these exploits were permanently patched by November 24, 2018. Following this update, users attempting to bypass the restriction were met with Error Code 524 (Not authorized to join this game). which was later replaced with Error Code 610 (Cannot join game with no authenticated user.)[citation needed]

Before its removal, games implemented scripts that allowed guests to chat using their own chat system instead of Roblox's official chat.

When a player hovered their mouse over a guest image when viewing game servers, the name used to appear as "A Friendly Guest". This was changed to read "A Roblox Player" before the guest feature was removed.[citation needed]

Functionality[]

Users could play as guests by clicking "Play" on a game while being logged out.

From 2008 to 2014, Guests were restricted to Super Safe Chat; a menu-based chat system. They weren't able to view chat messages sent by registered users unless they were also sent via Super Safe Chat. Following the removal of Super Safe Chat in 2014, Guests were "muted" and unable to send/receive messages from the In-game chat.

Between June-October 2017, Roblox implemented a 20-session trial limit for guests. Guests were notified of how many much trials they had before they were persuaded to create a registered Roblox account. before that date, guests were given no limit to how many games they were able to play. [citation needed] This was implemented to encourage players to create an account. Despite this, guests could still play as a guest after 20 trials using exploits.

Guests were assigned three avatars: the avatars of BillyBloxxer for guests who selected male, BettyBloxxer for guests who selected female, and DefaultGuest on Roblox Mobile.

Roblox stores a cookie on the user's computer that keeps their guest ID. Cookie editors were able to change a guest's ID number by changing the UserID in "GuestData". Guests had a randomly assigned number from 0 to 9999 whenever they entered a place. Other than users who joined before the removal of spaces in usernames, they are the only users who could have spaces in their usernames.

When Guests played games that saved data (like in-game money), they were not able to lose their data after exiting a game if they had gotten the same ID number again.[citation needed] However, this was very unlikely after a Roblox update that randomized the number for each play.

Back then, Guests had a negative UserID (e.g., -9999), likely to prevent overflow.[4] Attempting to go to a negative or 0 ID leads to a 404 page.

Upon its release until March 18, 2011, Guests would be given the same appearance as the "Roblox Roblox Admin BadgeRoblox is the official account representing Roblox Corporation. Learn more." account, including hats, allowing Guests to technically "try" accessories and, for the first weeks this appearance was present, have the Roblox account's gears.

After that, on March 18, 2011, gender options were added, allowing Guests to appear as "BillyBloxxer" or "BettyBloxxer". They had very similar appearances to the user Roblox Roblox Admin BadgeRoblox is the official account representing Roblox Corporation. Learn more., but had different hats depending on the gender chosen. BillyBloxxer wore the Red Roblox Cap, while BettyBloxxer wore the Pinktastic Hair. Some guests would be wearing these accessories as part of testing by late March 2011. By April 5, 2011, all guests would start sporting these accessories for the next 5 years.

One of the "Choose Your Character" pop-ups included avatars that weren't the actual guest avatars.

On July 12, 2016, the appearances of the guests were modified for the first time since 2011. The male guest (BillyBloxxer) wore a Roblox jacket, black jeans with grey sneakers, and the True Blue Hair. The female guest (BettyBloxxer) is similar to the male guest, except she wore the Lavender Updo Hair. The other guest type (DefaultGuest) looks similar to both the other guest types, except it is bald. On September 13, 2016, guests began to wear the Robloxian 2.0 package, and the DefaultGuest started wearing the ROBLOX 'R' Baseball Cap. Sixteen days later, the R15 body was applied to guests. (If the game were set to R6 Only, then R6 would have been applied.) After Roblox introduced a new logo, the guest's shirt changed to the new Roblox Logo Jacket on January 16, 2017 (six days after the logo began usage).

On July 1, 2017, and onwards, guests would sometimes appear with grey skin and a random torso color due to the default clothing update in Roblox.[citation needed]

In mid June 2023, BillyBloxxer, BettyBloxxer, and DefaultGuest wore the Stevie Standard animated head.

DefaultGuest, BillyBloxxer and BettyBloxxer from September 13, 2016, to January 16, 2017. The jacket would later be changed to reflect the new Roblox logo.

Mobile Guests[]

If playing on mobile, users will be loaded as a genderless guest (DefaultGuest). All guests who joined a game on Roblox mobile wore a Roblox jacket, jeans with grey sneakers, the 2.0 body, and the Roblox 'R' Baseball Cap due to not being able to choose if they wanted to be a male or female guest in the mobile versions.

Criticism[]

Guests were criticized mostly for being new and clueless players and for having fewer features than a normal player has. They were also criticized for being commonly used to exploit in games, plus for being able to evade bans easily.

There had been various petitions on Roblox to remove Guests, but Shedletsky stated that guests were not going to be removed at the time.[citation needed]

Removal of Guests[]

On October 2, 2017, support for Guests on PC was officially dropped.[7] KnightGaladeld stated that the reason was to increase the number of users in Roblox. Unregistered users can still access the website, but cannot join games, change an avatar, purchase Robux, leave comments, or create things. Most players supported this decision; however, some players opposed the decision and were vocal in protecting the Guest feature on places such as the Forums.

The cookie named "GuestData" can still be found in Roblox's cookies, but has no functionality.[citation needed]

Games[]

A few games had built-in chats that allowed Guests to type normally. This was a specific feature that a developer of their game would add to allow Guests to communicate. They no longer function due to the removal of Guests and various Roblox updates.
