Spread the word to Maya-fans!

Actually, I shall talk about CWC, since I shall be running it next year... eek! But what do people advise I do? I have the dolphinbox (I really hope it's in my schoolbag, because I haven't checked since the last day of school and I haven't technically got a locker any more, so if it's in my locker... I'm pretty sure it's in my bag though) and that'll be useful when I run out of ideas, but running out of ideas implies having ideas to start off with!

Tabby: I shall try and organise it to be on Thursday lunchtimes again, so feel free to descend on us. I'll mention if we couldn't get that day. (And... I can't remember what you said about organising the room :S Who do I have to see again?)

Plus we need to get other members of the club on LJ XD it'd be far more useful. Do you reckon we can convert many of the new year tens? I'm sure everyone from last year will come. If they don't, I'll set someone on them. Any volunteers?

(And I've just picked a random selection of tags... XD)

It's just an amazing course, so if any of you are interested, I would say "apply!".

In fact, if you are around and free on those dates and can afford it, I shall be intensely disappointed in my children if you don't at least get excited about them :p You're all more than capable of gaining a place on it, anyway!

Much love, chickadees

Others may have found the word a bit melodramatic, but Sophia didn't give a damn. Ludicrous was exactly the right word for nought factorial, (ludicrous: meriting derisive laughter or scorn as absurdly inept, false, or foolish) tenuous and hot and slippery on a plane that was entirely factual. The laws of mathematics were not eel-fish-slippy ideas that trickled through the fingers of your mind, they were solid. Dependable. Sophia knew the world of numbers and vectors inside out, could run a mile with tangents and trigonometry and the two possible solutions of the quadratic equation; she could just about grasp the concept of i (i: the square root of negative one), but she couldn't pin down why nought factorial was one. Why it was a tangible, substantial unit rather than nothing. How was it possible? She'd seen all the proofs, to be sure, and at one point or another had actually comprehended them. But no matter how many times she bludgeoned Kemp's ideas into her despairing head, they soon lost their lucidity (lucid: suffused with light; clear to the understanding). How could anyone arrive at the conclusion that nought, zero, nil, nothing could spawn a quantifiable value?

But zero itself was an anomaly she could properly appreciate. (Zero: the arithmetical symbol 0 or 0̸ denoting the absence of all magnitude or quantity; a state of total absence or neutrality) The absence of all magnitude and quantity, the great void in a whorl of quantities; whilst everything in the numeric spectrum measured and gauged, defined, tracked and calculated, zero was the singularity that remained apart and neutral. Essential to the entirety because before the concept of zero, the world of mathematics was pitiably small and zero provided grounding and an origin (origin: rise, beginning, or derivation from a source). Yes, zero was the source and the start, the field that begat the forest, it was no thing and yet every thing, and in those lucid moments, serene in a pool of numbers, the fractured whole, Sophia quietly thanked it for being there.

</div>

The task for Christmas was to rewrite Cinderella from an unsuspected point of view.

Anna and I wrote these on Thursday after the Biology GCSE mock. The idea was to put them together, with alternating paragraphs, but then we realised that it would be saying the same thing twice, if that makes sense.

Cinderella from one of the mice's point of view : here. First discovers this ability when he tries to throw himself off a building on learning the truth about Cynthia, but turns into a dove and flies to safety. However, he doesn't know he's descended from Zeus. He thinks it's a gift from aliens.
* He saves the world. When, how and why we do not yet know.

His Appearance is Thus:
* long fingers
* long nose
* green eyes
* He has feet so big some people call him Duck-Feet

* he is very tall (and all the implications of that)
* His hair is blonde naturally, but dyed black with blue streaks

The Other People in his Life:

* Cynthia: His human girlfriend of a significant amount of time, Cynthia is actually a lesbian, and has torrid affairs with other girls, but he doesn't know this until she comes out to him, in a possibly comical scene. This revelation prompts a suicide attempt that first lets him know of his lycanthropical abilities. She never got on with Tokora. She also runs over Tokora and re-awakens her lycanthropy.

* Tokora: Ostensibly Kevin's cat, Tokora is a cat/human. Descended from Bast, the Egyptian cat goddess, she was sent to Kevin to keep an eye on him and help him save the world. Somewhere along the way, she liked being a cat so much it clouded her human side. Cynthia, who never really liked her, runs her over after breaking up with Kevin, and reminds her of the fact that she can turn human occasionally, in accordance with the lunar cycle. And she sleeps with Kevin when she is human. In time, they figure it out so he turns into a cat and sleeps with her, too.

* Madeleine: Kevin's older sister. Madeleine thinks she's a high-class callgirl (not really high-class, in reality). Everyone else thinks she's off at some private company doing "research". Kevin finds out the truth about his sister when, during a particularly lonely night, he calls an escort agency and Madeleine (or "Princess", as that's her work-name) turns up on his doorstep. With whips.

* Bobbie: Roberta is Kevin's Australian friend (maybe cousin) with a pet frog called Albert. Bobbie is very close to Cynthia and is possibly the one who first makes her realise her homosexuality</div>
.

Since my dad would kill me if I tried to print this all off because it would waste so much ink and paper, I thought I would post links to websites about séances I found.

The obvious Wikipedia page
Askmen.com
SoYouWanna hold a séance?
How to have a séance
Conduct a séance
How to conduct a séance
Hold a séance - Communicate with the spirit world
How to Perform a séance - more like ouija with tips and warnings.
A bit about ouija boards should anyone find it interesting.

Also, I was watching this TV programme last night where this spiritual person, Yvette Fielding, was taking McFly around three really haunted places. In one place they held a séance. She had them all sit around a circular table with a black cloth over it and a single candle in the middle, which was lit. She had them all put their hands on the table and then she blew the candle out. She then started asking if there were any "spirit people" who wished to talk to her, and kept trying to talk to this "James" person who was a grumpy man who had apparently been there all day. She got him to tap in answer to questions, one for no, two for yes, and then she threw a marble in a corner of the room and asked him to throw it back at her. (A bit later on something happened and she thought it might've been the marble coming back, but as far as I watched it, she didn't verify that it was the marble.) I would've watched more, but I had a really bad headache and had to go to bed.

I also found this thing on yahoo answers where loads of people were going on about the dangers of communicating with spirits etc to this 14 year old girl.

There don't seem to be any key points. Every site says something different, and it's really confusing. I can't really think of which way would be the best way to go about holding a séance.

I think the main problem is that almost everywhere talks about using a round table, which don't exist at school. Also, I was wondering whether we would have enough time to actually do it during a lunch time? One site I read said thirty minutes plus, but another site said something about no shorter than an hour, which we will never be able to do with the new lunch times.

There is also the problem that some sites say do it at night, and it is not night time at lunch time. Not all sites said that, but some did, because spirits are more likely to be around then or something. Even the sites that did not specifically mention night time implied that the night would be the best time to do it.

Can I just ask a few things though? If we actually go through with a séance, (and November would be the best month due to the fact that most people shouldn't be writing anything other than NaNo), can we not make it overly religious? Religion makes me uncomfortable, especially religion that's really in your face. And another thing - is it really fair to try and talk to whatever ghosts are in the Manor just to exorcise them afterwards?

</div>
I would also just like to randomly end that thing on séances with this totally unrelated point: mistful's book is not coming out in English until summer 2009!!!
Hello my sparkling ones,

How are you? How's CWC going?

I hope to get a Thursday off some time in the next month or so, if you still want me to come and teach you. I'm actually on a residential creative writing course as Assistant Course Leader this week! Exciting! It's in Yorkshire, too, which should be awesome.

So basically I've been thinking... firstly, is there anything in particular that you guys would want me to do? Should I just post ramblings on different topics like characterisation, along with random exercisey things for you to do?

Also - how many of you are doing Nanowrimo this year?

Love and pencils xxx

Of nanowrimos and other animals

I have done something that I swore I would never do.

I think I might need lynching (any volounteers?)

Because the basis of my nano stems from chasing imaginary storms around charlton kings on the way to collect Giles from school one week a couple of octobers ago, I have used my family (or parts of it) as a springboard, stealing roles from myself, my mother and brother and throwing them into the blender. Characters change, but the situation is very similar and...knowing the truth as do...it scares me. It is, after all, only a short leap from there to self-insertion within novels.

Unfortunately for you, this means that I need to expose you to my three main characters. Joy especially, please yell if you see Me in there and I'll subvert it in any way possible!!!

The whistling of the kettle was almost lost in the incessant cacophony of wind and rain. Agatha Chance checked it twice and, when she was quite satisfied it had finished boiling, poured her tea and added the rest to the bubbling cauldron of jam brewing on the aga. She smiled to herself, allowing a moment of self-satisfaction to seep into the cosy warmth of the kitchen, and gave the large pot another, very exact, stir. The old grandfather clock pointed to three ten, and it was important to get this mixture exactly right. The parish coffee mornings might claim that they used Agatha's jam because it was cheap, tasted good and they knew that it used organic produce but she, if no one else, was aware of the careful protection lacing each dollop, more subtle and effective than any poison. Agatha smiled contentedly. She had her reasons for keeping as much of the parish as possible safe. Beneath the spice rack, stretched out languidly on her laundry, Archimedes the cat watched her, amber eyes slanted with lazy approval. Agatha reached out to rub his ears fondly, finding herself more appreciative of his company now that ever before.

“Its funny how age is inclined to sneak up on you, isn't it my dear feline?” she mused, smiling to herself. Others might consider talking to her cat as proof that her wits were wandering, but Agatha knew better. In addressing her monologues at Archimedes she was quite certain that she was choosing the most intelligent person in the room to speak to.

“Once I would have braved the weather, braved anything, for a chance to reverse the past” she continued, sighing slightly as she thought of it. “Once. Now, at last, I seem to have found some degree of peace.” A wry smile. “I am far happier to let such forces rest, and to pass the rest of my days as an old woman making jam and talking to her cat.”

Archimedes regarded her carefully. Agatha sighed. There was nothing transparent in the cat's unwavering stare, but she knew what was expected of her nonetheless.

“Of course I'm not too decrepit to check, you cheeky beast” she reassured him carefully. “Believe it or not, I have learned the consequences of ignoring certain days.”

Nuzzling at her hand, Archimedes began to purr. Agatha smiled despite herself. There were few things to compete with the peace, albeit a brief peace, of contentment and a cat. Reaching for the ladle again, she resumed her stirring. Outside, a magpie swooped hurriedly over her garden gate, buffeted about by the wind, headed straight for the door. She had barely raised her hand in to the customary salute when a knocking sound echoed against the wood. It was not too much of a stretch of the imagination to know exactly who had chosen this stormy afternoon to visit her. She turned the door-handle, smiling slightly.

“Good afternoon Elizar.”

</div>

After Agatha and Elizar swept out, undeniably headed towards some sort of personality clash, Melly sat obediently on the sofa and tried to contain her impatience. It was obvious that whatever they had left to debate had something to do with George, and the palpable sense of guilt emulating from Elizar suggested that he, at least in part, was to blame. Perversely, that somehow made her feel better. She knew that she carried the main responsibility for losing George, that was the type of conviction that could not be shaken, but knowing that someone else shared her guilt, even in a limited sense was oddly comforting. For the first time, Melly realised exactly why the parents of missing children were so very desperate to have the case solved and their abductors uncovered, even if the children were dead. True, they would be faced with the evidence of their nightmares but at the same time some of the hideous burden of guilt would have been lifted. They no longer had to divide blame, fretting over each moment when they might, essentially, have been failing to protect their child. She hadn't reached that stage yet, even the nightmares were still fundamentally preliminary, but she thought that she might understand. Perhaps it was even a good thing that no one had yet got through to her mother. There was still time, and ignorance was, after all, bliss.

On the other hand the level of irritation that surged through her when faced with the realisation that they were discussing her brother without her was almost surprising. What on earth, after all, did they think gave them the right to that? He was her brother and they were behaving as though she had no right to know about whatever Elizar had learned! Melly scowled and was halfway through deciding to go and listen at the door when the cat – Archimedes, she remembered – leapt rather forcefully onto her lap. Melly was rather fond of cats, amused by their obvious regard for their own intelligence, but even so the interruption startled her for a moment. It was, however, a fleeting disruption. Archimedes lost no time in settling comfortably on her lap, sprawled out arrogantly with the assumption that this new female, like the other, belonged entirely to him. Rolling her eyes and wondering exactly why cats were always so very confident, Melly tried to shift him gently, sliding her arms around the warm mottle fur and lifting as smoothly as she knew how. She was rewarded for her pains by several sharp needles embedding themselves in her thighs. Biting back several swearwords she tried again, unwilling to let even pain goad her into submission. However, no matter how hard she tried, Melly was unable to convince Archimedes to let her get up. Indeed, each time she tried the damned animal seemed to grow, until the ordinary sized cat almost resembled a dog each time she attempted to make it move. It was no use. What was more, she doubted very much that Agatha or Elizar were waiting for her to arrive to begin the relevant parts of their conversation. Resentfully, she settled down, somewhat mollified by the obvious approval of the cat who, having secured his own sofa, had returned to imitating a prince in his opulent surroundings. As the cat purred, however, Melly began to feel anything but mollified. Something in her memory was sharpening, something was pushing its way in, asserting itself, in her mind, something that had not been there an hour ago. She remembered, suddenly furious, the blinding wind and rain on the roof, the sheer fight to reach the body and the man... the man who, she was now sure, must have made her forget it. The same man, with his perfectly styled hair and obvious arrogance, who seemed to be at least partially responsible for the disappearance of George. Resentment seethed through every pore of her being. He had taken her memory away. How dare he? What on earth gave him the right to do that?

When Agatha and Elizar returned, it was to a highly unfriendly audience.
</div>

It was intolerable, absolutely intolerable. Between Agatha Chance and this Meliora girl, Eli felt rather as though he was being torn apart by hungry wolves. He could scarcely believe that the girl had the audacity to rant about her day when the dreadful nature of his own had far surpassed it. He had been feeling terrible since the night before, sweating and shaking with what seemed to resemble a magical flu, bypassing his immune system and instead heading straight for his powers. Any other day of the year he would have been perfectly at ease to rest until it had cleared, merely brushing up on his understanding or perhaps even using the fever to head into a full-blown trance, making the most of adverse circumstances. Instead, as fate would have it, he had been forced to change and spend his day flying about inside a storm sustained by magic, all because his batty instructor wanted to play the martyr. The blast of lightening had been the last straw, sending him hurtling towards a particularly unappealing landing spot with little option other than to disguise himself to outside eyes. He had sincerely doubted that even She was insane enough to have spies out in the storm. But then the girl, Meliora, had appeared and proceeded to lay into him. Frankly, if he wasn't so very certain about what had become of her brother, he might have been inclined to suspect that the boy was simply hiding away at a friend's home, taking shelter from her tirades until their mother returned. The girl terrified him, and he was supposedly trained to tackle nightmares up to and including the denizens of hell. After which, expecting comfort and warm blankets and Agatha's house, which, fair enough, he had received, he had found himself plunged head first into the Spanish inquisition, before the girl had shown up, again, and he'd realised that he was unlikely to be free of her until this whole unpleasant business was over. Adding growing powers of darkness which could, potentially, be seen as his fault, to this list seemed unfair, even by fate's standards. Honestly, if he didn't want his license so badly, Eli decided that it would serve them right if this magical flu managed to carry him away from this mortal coil. There was no way he got paid enough for this sort of thing. He toyed briefly with the idea of lowering his mental guard for the night, of letting those two bullying harpies see exactly how ill he was without fighting to contain it, but decided against it. Most likely the damned women would only amuse he was trying to wrangle sympathy from them anyway. And now he had to negotiate an explanation for the girl that managed to not tell her any details of what was doubtless planned for her brother. It looked like being another long night. Eli sat down heavily on the neat sofa, unconsciously picking up a pink cushion and turning it over in his hands.

“My assumption” he told Meliora wearily, careful to keep his voice calm, “is that your brother has been kidnapped by what your type might think of as fairies.”

“My type?” Well, the girl was quick, at least. Eli was aware of a wolfish smile tugging at the corners of his mouth that he quickly suppressed. The damn girl refused to trust him as it was. He had little inclination to make the situation worse.

“Fools.” he told her, bluntly, letting the official explanation follow the word before she had time to argue or complain. “It stands for Fortunately Oblivious Ordinary Lubbers. I believe they also answer to the populace or ordinary citizens, and would claim human beings for their sole use too if given half a chance.”

To his amazement, his blatant insult seemed to be the only thing that the girl had not taken offence to. Indeed, she looked almost amused.

“Was there anything 'in heaven or earth' that Shakespeare didn't know about?” She asked eventually. Eli bit back a laugh, fully aware that the infuriating girl's unexpected reaction had called his bluff.

“Lord, what fools these mortals be!”

</div>

Of course, even reading through to pull these extracts out, I'm very very aware of how substandard my writing is in places. Distressingly, these are the better bits. I definately need to revamp Melly's first introduction as a character, as its one of the earliest moments and, frankly, sucks. Fortunately for you, I'm not going to inflict it on you in its current state, and strongly suggest Joy skips to about page 5 after the first one....

Well, this was a waste of all your time. Sorry!

xxxx
Lucinda

I thought this could do with a... header, in a way.

Hello, I'm iltaru, also occasionally known as indiependance. I set up this group originally for the creative writing group I used to head at school, but frankly, I think the more people in a group, the more fun you have, so I decided to open the floor.

However, although membership is often chosen at the discretion of the maintainers (I love that word: it sounds so mystical), feel free to ask to join if you like what you see, and if you introduce yourself, we'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

Now, there are various ramblings on here already - I'd like to leave them up. satuvesa is a group for writers, scribblers, appreciaters of sarahtales and other such strange folk. This site is for questions and ramblings and blowing bubbles. I'd like us to share writing tasks and articles as well as the normal posting and criticisms of work, 'cause you know, I like things like that.

So. Post comments here if you're new. I'm still not sure how to manage this thing, but I'm getting the hang of it.

I don't know particularly much about this, so thought I'd ask to see if anyone *looks specifically at Joy, Mistress of all things Creative Writing Related around these Parts* had any ideas at how to go about this noble and worthwhile endeavour?

Because someone asked me to do some a while back, and I realised I didn't have a clue how to set about it.

What thinkst thou, shiny hobbits?
So, this weekend, I thought it would be a good idea to try synopsising Exo-Genesis. It was an interesting exercise, which has lead to various ideas of how to give the novel version its own 'feel', rather than just "I haven't quite got the guts to make it a script yet".

It's taken ages... but I have nine pages. And I have lots of beginning, and plenty of end... but now I need to sort out the middle.

Still, generally I'm pleased. And tabsybelle is going to be my beta/editor.
