Potential benefits of dietary nitrate ingestion in healthy and clinical populations: A brief review
Abstract: This article provides an overview of the current literature relating to the efficacy of dietary nitrate (NO) ingestion in altering aspects of cardiovascular and metabolic health and exercise capacity in healthy and diseased individuals. The consumption of NO-rich vegetables, such as spinach and beetroot, have been variously shown to promote nitric oxide bioavailability, reduce systemic blood pressure, enhance tissue blood flow, modulate muscle O utilisation and improve exercise tolerance both in normoxia and i…

“…reduction of O 2 demand, increased contractile efficiency, ATP utilization), an improvement in ergometer-based 1000 m TT performance in kayak athletes was expected. However, the optimal conditions for a performance-enhancing effect of dietary nitrate are partially unclear, especially in elite athletes [ 79 ]. This is mirrored by the literature showing that some studies have found a performance-enhancing effect [ 2 , 5 , 8 , 80 ], while others reported no or only marginal effects [ 81–83 ].…”

“…Beetroot juice supplementation is a dietary source rich in inorganic nitrate, which is a precursor of NO, through reduction processes that start in the mouth (from nitrate – to nitrite) and continue in the stomach and at the systemic level (reducion of the nitrite to NO). 131 NO is a potent vasodilator compound that enhances blood flow in skeletal muscles, improving muscle oxygenation, and contractile force in type II (ie, fast-twitch) muscle fibers. There is also recent evidence suggesting that NO has the capacity to increase intramuscular nitrate storage.…”

“…Beets and green leafy vegetables such as spinach, lettuce, and arugula are significant sources of naturally occurring inorganic nitrate (NO3), containing more than 250 mg of NO3 per 100 g of fresh vegetable weight [ 24 ]. Spinach, beetroot juice, and other forms of NO3 supplementation have recently become widely used nutritional interventions to improve exercise capacity and performance [ 25 ]. Among other sources rich in inorganic NO3, red spinach extract has emerged as a different alternative to beetroot juice, which contains no carbohydrates or oxalates and is rich in minerals such as potassium and magnesium [ 26 ].…”
