“…Supplementation with lycopene may improve cognitive function and reduce the risk of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease. The regular consumption of tomato products providing approximately 30 mg of lycopene per day over a period of several weeks has been demonstrated to engender improvements in oxidative stress markers, with the potential to support neuroprotection in older adults [ 125 ]. Lycopene is also recognized for its potential role in reducing the risk of certain cancers, with evidence supporting its efficacy against prostate cancer (where doses of 15–30 mg daily in humans, or 5–45 mg/kg diet in preclinical studies, administered over 8–12 weeks have shown significant protective effects) [ 126 ], lung cancer (where doses of 15–60 mg/day, particularly higher doses associated with a 3.4-fold increase in lung tissue concentration, have demonstrated benefits over durations of 8–14 weeks) [ 127 ], and stomach cancer (where daily intakes ranging from 5 to 10 mg for general protective effects to 15–30 mg for stronger preventive outcomes, sustained over several months, have been linked to significant reductions in risk) [ 128 ].…”

“…In vitro and in vivo studies demonstrated that pretreatment with lycopene reduced A β ‐induced cellular damage and prevented A β 1–42‐stimulated cellular apoptosis via the inhibition of ROS production (Ratto et al. 2022; Dias et al. 2014).…”

“…Carotenoid astaxanthin showed efficacy in the reducing of neurotoxicity induced by the Aβ fragments in cell culture models of AD (Lobos et al 2016;Wang et al 2010). In vitro and in vivo studies demonstrated that pretreatment with lycopene reduced Aβ-induced cellular damage and prevented Aβ 1-42-stimulated cellular apoptosis via the inhibition of ROS production (Ratto et al 2022;Dias et al 2014). However, numerous reports are available on synthetic or semisynthetic compounds containing long alkyl chains linked to nitrogen or sulfur together with moieties/heterocycles or positively charged groups like compounds 3, 4, and 5.…”

“…Lycopene also showed antidiabetic properties [37,50]. Research proves its beneficial effects in nervous system disorders, including neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson s disease and Alzheimer s disease [51][52][53][54]. The positive effect of lycopene has also been observed in liver diseases and ulcerative colitis [16,55].…”
