This story is a must read for the psychological spiral it causes as it dawns on you that you understand why each character does what they do and neither is wrong from their own perspective, just like in life.
Not only are the visuals stunning, the psychological conflict and the exposure to the protagonist's thought process in her acts, especially in the route where she questions herself more and hears the input of others, brings a gut-wrenching feeling of would I have done the same in her place for that love and safety, given her history, trauma, desperation, and limited knowledge of the kingdom's affairs?
It is all a matter of perception and I especially loved how that is shown through the dynamic the protagonist has with Nyi Blorong, and how the latter does impact her emotionally far more than any of the others, aside from the queen, of course. This does make me think... she had hope for the MC, and did not punish nor tell on her...only to be crushed under her own desire to protect the MC's feelings. So many fall into that trap just because it is a gamble where the possibility that the good ending of the protagonist changing her ways after being given another chance is much more desirable than being the one who ends it. She was willing to trust that the MC would not fall into the rabbit hole and it is heartbreaking that both of them meant well and cared for one another, only for us to arrive at the same old saying that the road to hell is paved with good intentions, where the protagonist ultimately chooses the blend of fear for the queen's safety, uncertainty for her future, and love for the queen, over the friendship she had with Nyi Blorong.
Speaking of which, the queen's behaviour does make one feel like they are walking on eggshells, wondering when a shell will pierce their bare foot.
This is such a gorgeous game! The art and sound direction were beautiful, and I loved the atmosphere, I was so immersed.
====SPOILERS====
The storyline was so intriguing - I'm not familiar with this myth, and at first I thought that everyone else was suspicious/knew more than they were letting on. Kandita's gradual transformation, as her traumatic past experiences and warped obsession twist her over the course of the story, is enthralling. It definitely didn't go in the direction that I was expecting! Absolutely gorgeous work on this game, it's so inspiring!
What an incredibly rare treat to see SEA/Indonesian mythology in a game - loved the atmosphere in this game, it's unlike anything I've ever played! I only wish that the world could be expanded upon more.
God, what an incredibly gorgeous and well-written game. Though it was around 2 hours of play time I felt like it flew by in an instant. Everything about the game, from the presentation to the sprites to the writing work so well together, I couldn't stop being awed. I love seeing stories and myth reimaginings from other countries, especially those in the global south like mine whose stories aren't often put in the spotlight.
And what a great story it was. The obsession, the twisted love, the Queen's unsettling personality that made me wonder at all times if she knew more than she let on... and the death scenes, they were so atmospheric and gorgeous, I got super into it.
I'm amazed at how well-crafted every part of this game is, I'm so happy I played it and so happy it was made!!
I haven't yet finished the game but I quite liked what I've seen. Good use of the sound, it really adds to the atmosphere. Perhaps try posting a short trailer on youtube and linking to other forums like lemmasoft or reddit (/vns, /visualnovels) for more exposure. It's such a shame it has so little ratings.
We do have a short trailer available to share, but we'll keep in mind of sharing it to other platforms. We appreciate the suggestion! Thank you for the support & for playing our game!
Psychological horror has always been something that I thoroughly enjoy and Larut has given me such a good and cathartic experience in divulging the chaotic mind of Kandita, clouded by her devotion and obsession over the Queen (I'd pay for her therapy if I could).
Godly art and animation and striking narrative and dialogues! Admire the way they turned into a monstrous thing for Kandita to justify her wrong deed. Love how she is spiraling in the guilt and the obsession over the Queen's grace, yearning for her kindness (that she wasn't ready to receive).
Shout out to Kanjeng Ratu Kidul. Very elegant character, what an elusive ruler with mysterious air around her. She remains untouchable even until the end.
Thank you for making this game. Worth every second of my time!
