Lookism

From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Georg Emmanuel Opiz, Der Völler (The Glutton), 1804 - people who are overweight or obese are often seen as negative; many people think they lack control over their diet.

Lookism is a set of ideas about the way people look. It says that is alright to discriminate against people who do not "look good" or fit common ideals of beauty. It is also about stereotyping people based on their looks, and about discriminating against people who do not match common ideals of beauty or handsomeness in society. The theme is especially present in the United States, and in England. The term has been around since the 1960s.
