Save and exit doesn't work?
No matter where I am, no matter what I do, this new option in the pause screen never works and I can't click it. I'm playing on the hard difficulty (not the hardest), so that might be the case. But then again, I think this option should be allowed on any difficulty, purely out of convenience.

We probably made this a bit confusing, we admit. But if you can simply save and exit any time, you can easily abuse that feature and use it as a quick save. Then what's the point of the death-rebirth system and the restrictions of the harder difficulity? It wouldn't have any weight at all. If you choose to use protected quicksaves, you understand that you playing the game differently that it was originally envisioned. That totally okay, that's why we put that feature in. And that's why that option enables the save & exit as well as another tool for you. (It creates an auto save instead of a quicksave, so you won't override your quicksave with it.)

But! We are open to discussions as always. :) And we tend to enable “save and exit,” regardless of the protected quicksaves option, although so far no one else besides you two has had a problem with it. So we need a bit more feedback on it before making that step.

AFAIK you need to go into options and enable saving on any difficulty options. It's counted the same as quicksaves so it's not allowed on harder difficulties. Don't let ego get in the way of fun, hell just ignore quicksaving and play with that option enabled, save and quit makes it much less painful

The point of save and exit feature in this type of games is so that you can actually quit the game at any moment you want and it's especially useful when you need to get things done, want to take a break, etc. So, I'm not sure why the devs added this option and locked it behind lower difficulties or options that go against their design philosophy.
what's he point of having save and quit while still having to enable quicksave? ffs
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

If people want to abuse this system, it's on them. You can already abuse dying system by alt+f4 your way out of the game, I assume it can be a nice way of saving lives on the hardest difficulty.

Now, you could do 2 other things concerning save and exit feature if you really want to. But understand that for most people this is simply used to take a break from the game at any moment without losing any progress.

1. I think I've see a system where the saves are only used for loading the game and they get deleted right after doing so. Perhaps that could ease the choice of enabling them on any difficulty for you somehow?

2. One of the other things I proposed some time ago was having an option to save near the healing stations. It's really not fun that I wanted to finish playing my session, but I got autosaved somewhere (and some save triggers can be quite inconvenient) and now I can't expore some things, clear the surroundings before signing off since it would be lost until I find another checkpoint or run back and forth to trigger the current one.

It won't help much in the situations where someone just needs to quckly quit the game and have their progress saved, but at least it can be viewed as a "balanced" option for all difficulties.
Valid points. We are gathering feedback and will refine the save system further. Thanks for the insight as always! :)
delete exitsave after game is loaded for exemple? point of it - not wait for dome\haven\auto - exit and then continue seamlessly from exit point, not to have extra slot or "covience" of one click
