Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition

Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition

20 FPS BUG IN ALL GAME AREAS
My video card broke, so I'm only using the processor. Even so, there should be enough performance to run DMC 3. This is very strange; I tried the style switcher mod, dgvoodoo2, I tried using only two processor cores, I tried deleting the sound folder... I can't take it anymore. Without a video card, I won't play the HD version for now, until I buy another one. Does anyone know what this damn bug is? In the emulator, the game runs at a locked 60fps...

its an old machine. I don't need new generation games in this pc because i can use the consoles for this. i use only for old games and studies. I5 2400 and 8gb ram. my gpu is broken....
this game it's supposed to run in a potato pc...
This part should be taken account as well.
Minimum: 128MB VRAM, Shader 2.0, DirectX 9.0 Soundcard
Recommended: Intel Premium 4 Processor 2.0 Ghz or better, 512 MB RAM, VRAM 256 MB and above, Nvidia GeForce 7500

So it's because of the dedicated video card? Maybe it's because the integrated video is sharing system memory, since it doesn't have its own memory. So I believe that with any cheap video card the game should run at 60 frames per second.

Could be. I tested it with my brother's old PC which has AMD Ryzen 3200G (with a few fps drops on some occasions since it doesn't have an actual GPU) and an old HP 655 Notebook laptop (AMD Radeon HD 6310) which ran fine.

That's a bold claim...
"Potato" is very subjective tbh...
I have a 2700X CPU and some "less than informed" ( cough IGNORANT ) people would happily call my entire PC "potato" ( eg because they would have 5090 or something ).
By their definition your old parts wouldn't even be sprouts in the ground :P

What you need to understand is that most people use "potato" to describe "older than X", where X is some ARBITRARY number of years...
Which is incredibly disingenuous...
Between 2000 and 2011 ( your CPU released ) the technological progress was breakneck RAPID...
Those weren't even "leaps", those were giant superhuman hops...
Between 2011 and 2018 the progress was still RAPID, but slowed down...
Now... between 2018 and 2026, the technological progress MAJORLY slowed down...
It could almost be said that "not much has happened" ( in terms of progress ) - but it was masked very well by disingenuous misleading marketing, and by game engines and games rapidly adopting things such as dynamic resolution rendering, as well as "upscaling" ( rendering in sub 100% resolution scale, and then upscaling that to viewport - note: upscaling was possible, and was implemented in plenty of games BEFORE DLSS was a thing - I just want to make this CLEAR, that DLSS didn't "invent" upscaling or anything!! ) - this gave a whole lot of people a false impression that the GPU improvements generation to generation were greater than they really were.
In the last 3 years - I don't want to say we got to a "standstill" - but certainly the progress is almost non-existent - where new GPUs instead increase POWER by a lot, instead of innovating and increasing efficiency - in previous years ( before the line has "flattened" ) it was that generation to generation you would get more GFlops for the same amount of power, the efficiency was getting higher, so a newer GPU did more work ( performed better ) while consuming same amount of power than the older GPU - nowadays, to put this mildly, it's not as much of a progress, as you are just effectively getting a product which doesn't REALLY progressess anything, it just throws more power at the problem.

I brought this up fairly recently in a private conversation with someone, let me explain that:

let's say there are 2 GPUs

GPU A
Released in year 1
Consumes 100 watts.
Does 30 fps in game X.

GPU B
Released in year 2 ( 1 year later )
Consumes 200 watts.
Does 60 fps in game X ( same game )

Yes, GPU B has "higher performance" - but not for the same amount of power.
It isn't exactly "PROGRESS" per say. It's simply making a bigger chip, that does twice the work at twice the power.
It's incredibly disingenuous to then call this "generational PROGRESS" - yet this is EXACTLY how marketing of TODAY seems to be working with SOME GPUs released nowadays ( that, and also using FRAUDULENT manipulated marketing graphs which eg compare an older GPU running NATIVE ( no upscaling ) to a newer GPU that runs with DLSS ON - Nvidia has done EXACTLY that in their graphs, and LOTS of ppl fell for that ).

To me personally, GPUs which consume 600 watts are absolutely INSANE concept.
With the energy prices ( note: I am in EU ), they are unsustainable in practise... it's not as much the cost of the initial purchase ( which is already insane ) but the following cost of operation that makes them just absurd.
And that's before we take heat output ( not everyone has AC at home outside of USA ), and noise ( do people LIKE getting deaf?! ) into consideration.

But alas...

I have an RX590 - a top of the line ( from AMD, for given GPU generation ) GPU from 2018.
It has 8 G VRAM.
Plenty of people would call this a "potato" ( mostly misinformed ppl ), and shame me like those women in the "lady pointing at cat" meme.
Yet I can play Unreal Engine 4 games just fine.
And if I drop down graphics to lowest, I can even play some Unreal Engine 5 games at native 1920x1080, sometimes lower ( native res, I DON'T use upscalers... I hate them as a general rule ).

Between 2011 ( your iGPU in your CPU ) and 2018 ( my dGPU ), the progress and performance improvements were HUGE.
Between 2018 and 2026 ( now ), the performance improvements DID happen, but they were far less significant comparatively.
Thus, say, GTX 1060, can still play most new games of TODAY ( assuming the games don't use "Ray tracing" of ANY kind, including Forced-on SOFTWARE Lumen! ), even tho it's an "OLD GPU" in terms of YEARS...

If you would take a dGPU from say, 2006, and would try to run 2011 games on it, the GPU would trip over it's own legs, and the fps would be CRUNCHY, very likely unplayable.

But in the last few years, so little has happened that having say, 6 year old GPU, it may easily be perfectly adequate for playing modern games...

To visualise this, look at this graph:
( ignore the text and the numbers, look at JUST the red line )
https://study.com/cimages/multimages/16/log_graph_1.jpg

This is how the "technological progress" and gen-to-gen performance increases looked like for GPUs between 2000 and 2026.
MY ( AMD RX 590 ) GPU is close to the right side, YOUR iGPU is closer to the LEFT.
BOTH would be called "POTATO" by some incredibly ignorant people, many of whom would happily yell "haha, POOR!" at us...
But "potato" of TODAY, is not the same as "potato ALREADY IN 2011"...

MOST People on the internet will arbitrarily call a "potato" EVERYTHING older than some arbitrary number of years...
IRREGARDLESS of how absurdally wide range of performance of the older parts it entails.
For that reason the term "potato" is WORTHLESS and those people are just DUMB.
At that point "potato" can mean BORDERLINE ANYTHING from "runs a 2d display AT ALL" to "weaker than my super expensive GPU that puts my mom in shambles when she has to pay electricity bills after I game out with my Discord totally-definitely-friends in her basement while I don't have a job".
It's MEANINGLESS.
Imo, the term should die, and people shouldn't use it anymore - because it's borderline misleading.

This game ( and many other games ) would sure work on a potato of TODAY... but YOUR potato is "seasoned" and comes from the times when you could very well play "sh*tty flute" as a music theme for the GPU...
You have a TRUE potato :D
From the OLD times, when "intergrated graphics" meant "getting pitty looks" :P
( please don't get offended... this isn't meant to be offensive!! )

When people tell you "oh, this game will run on a TRASH computer!!" - they don't really mean it - they are just making a mental shortcut to "within reason" ( and their "reason" can be ANYTHING ).
People really REALLY shouldn't be using a term "potato PC" because it's just incredibly misleading...

Your iGPU is from the times when "integrated graphics" meant generally "total utter garbage".
It was only around that time of your CPU, that AMD started making their integrated graphics which had any more "better" performance - but it took YEARS after to get to a point where "integrated graphics" were worth a damn...

On iGPU from TODAY, you can TOTALLY play plenty of games.
But that is completely incomparable to iGPU from 2011...
BOTH would be called "potato" by plenty of people - and again, this is just borderline misleading...

It could very well be that the chip just isn't strong enough ( again, iGPUs used to be a LOT TRASHIER back then compared to today ).
But it could also be some other reason.
Could be a combination of both.

That should be of little relevance unless the VRAM amount is misconfigured.
Generally - yes, system RAM is A LOOOOOOOT slower than dedicated VRAM, but I don't think you are running out of VRAM ( unless you went too far with the graphics settings in game ) or getting choked by the VRAM speed...

Please don't use term "ANY" in conversations like this... Maybe use "ANY past some year X" instead... ( and even then, you would have to pick the year carefully, if you want the claim to be true - remember - "ANY" also includes office-grade bottom of the barrel OEM-designated GPUs that most gamers never even heard of, eg RX 520, etc ).

This has Vega 8 ( iGPU ). This is a STRONG iGPU ( historically speaking ). Plenty of NEW games can be easily played on it.
And I wouldn't call this "old" per se ( see my longwinded explanation above ).

Couple of questions for you:
1. Which OS do you use
2. Is your OS 64bit or 32bit
3. Do you play using MKB or controller
4. Can you make screenshots of your in-game graphics settings and post them
5. Did you change any BIOS settings, eg related to VRAM allocation
6. What motherboard do you have
7. How many sticks of RAM do you have installed
8. What's the MHz speed of your RAM
9. Are you willing to run some popular software to give us more performance details?

Please note that I am frequently busy IRL so long delays in my responses are to be expected...
