interesting blend of gun combat and soulslike parry system - better value on discount

pros
  • plays like a blend of 2000's console shooters (think Halo) - the tempo of fights is not as fast as a boomer shooter, but definitely faster than a first-person adventure Bethesda game
  • game looks great if you have the hardware to run it, however the title is properly optimised to maintain 60fps for many enthusiast PC builds
  • quite a lot of content for the base game - about 22 full sized maps that take about 40-60 minutes or longer to slowly explore all of the map secrets
  • some variety in gameplay with mech fights and dragon themed levels
  • accessibility settings for granular tweaking of difficulty
  • shield mechanic allows for some difficulty tweaking as well - on the "brink of death" mechanic, defeating fodder demons with the shield throw allows for some minor health regeneration that can encourage more aggressive play regardless of skill level
  • challenges for each level encourage experimenting with new mechanics
  • enemy behavior has been tuned properly for the parry system - most projectiles now tend to be placed within your field of view, with less emphasis placed on strafing and level traversal to avoid taking damage while attacking enemies

cons
  • FOV doesn't seem to reduce the size of weapons on the screen (they take up about 20-30% of the bottom of the screen)
  • limited variety of unique enemies for demonic essence encounters - you'll fight a handful of leader demon enemy types for upgrades, but these leader demons don't seem visually distinct from their normal forms except for a health, armor or ammo upgrade icon above their model during gameplay
  • weapon mastery challenges are all tied to fully upgraded weapons, which will be difficult to access for players who are experiencing the game without prior information (e.g. in the form of a walkthrough) - some unique upgrade resources can only be found by exploring, and cannot be obtained through fighting enemies
  • some level challenge requirements for combat require players to play less efficiently in order to meet the number requirements within one playthrough of the level. there was only one instance where a level had to be replayed because there was insufficient enemies to finish a level challenge in one playthrough without checkpoint restarts - this is the section where the Berserk powerup is reintroduced
  • lore is great, but seems to exist separately from the mechanics
  • parry cues are a bit overdone, with a bright yellow-green color indicating an attack that can be parried. it's not quite yellow paint, but the parry cue color influences the look of the game quite significantly

summary
  • best value if bought on a discount
  • well-optimised for hitting 60FPS
  • unique combat system

Hello.. I come with another game recommendation.. I think you should sink many, many, many hours into KCD and KCD2 and absolutely add it to your completionist showcase. Trust me. I would never lead you astray. :steamhappy:
