My mom invited me to go to Washington, D.C. for the America 250 celebration with the family, and of course I could never turn that down!! We live close to D.C., (no, I don't actually live in Ohio) so when picking a place to watch fireworks, it's kind of an obvious choice. I want to say that of the whole experience, the fireworks show was NOT the coolest thing I saw, even if it was technically the biggest fireworks display ever with 850,000 fireworks for 45 minutes, and I think many others would also unfortunately agree (ahem, ctrl + c & ctrl + v).
No, despite all the bright flashy colors you see on this page, I was actually more impressed by the flyovers! My favorite sight was seeing a B-1 Lancer, B-2 Spirit, and B-52 Stratofortress fly over the Washington Monument in formation. I even got to see the B-1 fly over with afterburner! The whole event actually got evacuated in the middle of it because of severe weather. We ended up taking shelter in the USDA building and everyone broke out into the national anthem and everybody clapped and chanted "USA! USA! USA!" LOL! What da heck is a kilometer?! I guess being in difficult situations like that brings people together, even as cliche and cheesy as it is.
Anyway, we actually took the Virginia Railway Express train up there! It's the local commuter train but because of the event, they ran trains at night just for this! Prior to this, I had only been on an old steam locomotive with open carriages on a sight-seeing tour in the mountains of West Virginia, and the trains in Busch Gardens. This was the first time I had ever ridden a train for actual transportation. We sat on the upper deck where it is all single seats except the last "row" (can you even call them rows if they are individual seats?) where the only double seats were, and I sat with my girlfriend. The VRE was actually quite nice.
That was last weekend. One round-trip on the VRE has train-pilled me. So much so, in fact, that I took an Amtrak train to Baltimore last night to see Armor For Sleep a third time!! I first saw them in Baltimore at Nevermore Hall last year when they opened for Senses Fail and Story of the Year, and I saw them a few weeks ago in Allentown, PA. I had bought three shirts from the merch stand in Allentown and there was a fourth shirt I wanted but for some stupid reason, I did not buy it. So I went to see them again! I got to buy that shirt I wanted but I can NEVER, EVER wear it... Because the whole band signed it! XD Ben, Nash, Chad and Erik all signed it! I got to meet and talk to Ben, got a photo, fist-bumped Nash. This was the best show ever. Ben even said so. He said he would remember it.
The show was supposed to be at Baltimore Soundstage (which is right by Nevermore Hall), but the air conditioning broke. I looked at my ticket at 3 AM on Wednesday to find the venue changed. The tickets were now sold out. The next day, my parking was refunded, which was good because that would've been a 45 minute walk! I know I called last month's post "SMALL VENUES RULE!!!", but this one was EVEN SMALLER!! The show moved to Metro Baltimore, which turns out to be right behind Baltimore-Penn Station! So having been so fascinated by the VRE train last weekend, of course I had to book a round-trip with Amtrak! I got a horrible hotel room a mile away and took a train instead of my car. Half the trip was electric, too! The electric train topped out at 125MPH!! XD
So why did Ben say he would remember this show? My guess, based on how Allentown's venue, Arrow at Archer Hall was like 50% larger and had security and barriers, I think most of the shows also had more room and barriers and security. Well, Metro Baltimore didn't have any of that. There was no security, not even a screening. And the room was only like 55'x40' (which is like the size of 4 18-wheelers side by side or 352 washing machines or 7 New York studio apartments) and only half of that was in line with the stage. The stage was so small that they only had one drum set on it. Flycatcher and Spanish Love Songs used Nash's kick if not more of his kit. The stage was right there, no barrier. This was the most intimate show I have ever been to. People were moshing so hard, and crowd surfers would get dropped onto the stage and run around the band before jumping back into the crowd. Chad and Ben had to lift their guitar necks out of the way of people LOL! This venue had to have been smaller than the original venue was. Maybe people had tickets refunded. We were let in by our names on a paper list. I estimate about 180 people attended. I think if the show never moved to this tiny venue, people wouldn't have been crowd-surfing onto the stage next to the band and that's why Ben said he'd remember it. Maybe it's been a long, long time since his fans got thrown up on the stage next to him. A girl in the front fell and Ben checked on her after the song ended and again after the show. I also got to talk to Ben and got a photo, bumped fists with Nash, and had a quick chat with Erik on the sidewalk, and they all signed a shirt for me! The whole band was so cool and friendly. The energy of this show was completely INSANE and I will never forget it either.

Sorry for repeating myself so much LOL. I'm bad at writing and flow. Anyway, if the federal government is reading this, firstly, sorry to y'all specifically, but also, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, PLEASE SERIOUSLY SUBSIDIZE PASSENGER RAIL EXPANSION!!! WHY IS OVER 90% OF RAIL JUST FREIGHT?!
