Really enjoyable game if you stick with it, though it's got a brutal learning curve. Honestly, in the beginning, you'd probably be better off punching yourself in the face than punching other people.

This is a YMMV game.

OPTION 1: Join a random server and shoot reasonably inaccurate weapons at your enemy. If you do it this way, you'll get bored within a few rounds.

OPTION 2: Start at option 1, then join a regiment. Get yelled at a lot (you will be bad when you start) but learn how to enjoy the game at a far deeper level. Feel the joy of loosing a perfect volley as a line, even if you don't hit anything at all. If you jump into a random game after being part of a regiment, you'll enjoy it more because you'll be doing stuff you'd never normally do as part of a regiment.

Oddly enough, the game closest to this in spirit is probably Insurgency. If you're going all Rambo on it like it's Napoleon:CoD, you'll miss out on a game that is pretty deep despite still being in alpha. If you play it with a loose group of friends it's a whole lot better, but if you're organized it's really enjoyable.

Plus those Prussian uniforms are pretty flash.

Oh, how I hated this game when I started. No matter what I tried to do, I'd die horribly. I went through a bunch of charming encounters with cool aliens who liked me, loathed me or wanted me to participate in a ridiculous pet show, then I'd die. I cratered the crew into planets both in ship and lander form. I ran out of gas and died. I visited inhospitable planets to get rare stuff and confirmed that yes, those planets were pretty inhospitable. I tried combat for the first time and succeeded. Bolstered by such, I tried it again and failed in a pretty spectacular manner. I had so many wonderful encounters that it made me really like playing the game despite the fact that every time I played through, I'd be dead way before I even sniffed home.

Finally, I had this great playthrough. I managed to brave everything the game threw at me. I had crewmembers die in both bravely sacrificial and remarkably banal ways. But I made it back home. And, damn it, I wasn't celebrating. I just wanted to play the game again.
