She left. I stood in the crowd, suddenly unsure whether to turn left or right. It turned out that being lost isn't about not finding the way — it's about not knowing where to go.
I walked out of that place, full of meetings and partings, missing the girl I loved. Watching people come and go on the busy street, standing on this ground without her, I quietly slipped into a corner. From my pocket, I took out the cigarette we hadn't finished smoking together. A small flame glowed at the tip of my lips. I lifted my head and saw an old man.
He sat there silently, a quiet contrast to the noisy crowd around him. He wore an old jacket, the cuffs worn pale. He didn't speak, his eyes fixed on some distant place. I might not have noticed him at all, until he reached into his pocket and pulled out a tiny, folded photograph. Its edges had faded white. He looked at it for a long time, then gently folded it back.
When he noticed me watching, he took out his own worn cigarette. I quietly lit it for him. I sat beside him, and we talked for a long while — just the length of one cigarette. Yet in that short time, I felt so much.
As the sky slowly darkened, the old man rose and left. I watched him fade into the crowd. He was clearly a man with stories. I didn't feel he was simply passing time there; perhaps he was waiting for someone from long ago.
I pulled my coat tighter around me, turning his words over in my mind, before disappearing into the sea of people myself.
People live for the sake of living itself. Love is the same. We love for the sake of loving, not for any result.
