What can I go, HELP please...

here's my story...Gosh, this really hits home. I received a notice on my apartment door yesterday 4/2/12 claiming that my dog "resembled a "pit bull mix"" which aren't allowed at my apartment complex along with several other Friendly breeds. I couldn't even begin to tell you how much hair I've pulled, how many tears I've shed and how many people I've asked for help from. It's now 4/3/12 I have two weeks left with my "Bruin" before my apartment forces me to let him go. Mixed or not he is the sweetest thing to ever happen to me and I to him ( I hope :) ) The people who run my apartment complex are no dog expert, no Cesar Milan... who are they to deem what breed my dog is or how friendly they think he is capable to be. Why must we Americans hold on to such ignorance, when we are mutts ourselves. Mixed breeds if you will. I am proud of my mixed heritage, which makes me a true American. Bruin is a gorgeous mix of Boxer and Standfordish Terrier A.K.A. Pit Bull. Stop the discrimination.
A southern California family's apartment burns down, and they have a rough time finding a new one due to apartment landlords refusing to house their dog. The only reason they got out of that fire alive? Their pit bull, Diamond.

The story of her heroism:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umUa96B2JyU

New member could use some help.

* x-posted a bunch of places

Hey fellas!
I'm a new member to this comm and, unfortunately, already have reason to appeal to you all for help.
I'm from New Orleans. This week has seen tragedy in the form of two separate incidents of injury, due to irresponsible owners not properly supervising their dogs. (Article: www.wdsu.com/news/23035700/detail.html)
There is a survey on that page, that lovers of bully breeds are trailing in votes. There's also a comment section. Mine is so far the only comment in support of bullys and against BSL. (My Comment)

"I am the very proud mom of a beautiful pit bull named Floyd (De Lis). I am neither a drug dealer nor a dog fighter, and I resent the implication that those would be the only reasons a person would own a dog of the bully breeds. Floyd is up to date on his licenses, shots, and paperwork. He is well trained and well cared for. He sleeps in my (our) bed at night, snuggling with my cat and my Rat Terrier, who would be utterly devastated if people who support BSL got their way. Bullys are a collection of strong breeds. They are beautiful, mischievous, protective, playful, affectionate, and require boundaries and strong leadership- not to be thrown in a yard somewhere and forgotten. Pit Bulls become aggressive when they are TAUGHT to; just like any other dog. And the owners who teach their dogs to be aggressive DO need prosecution. I had my face bit twice as a child; once by a Dalmatian, and once by a Shi-Tzu. Why? Because they are DOGS. Dogs NEVER attack without provocation. (All) Dog owners need to be constantly aware of this, and aware of their particular dogs' triggers. To eliminate a breed because of the irresponsible and criminal acts of a few horrible, abusive owners would be pointless. Don't you think those odious people would just find themselves another aggressive breed to abuse and exploit? If guns are outlawed, crime still occurs. We need to deal with the PEOPLE committing crimes. We need to PROTECT these wonderful dogs, not kill them."

Could anybody spare a few moments/comments?
I appreciate your time!
L, Kell

Potential car-jacker messes with the wrong vehicle

And he was just standing right there."

Amber found herself face-to-face with a possible car-jacker. The man spooked Victor, too - but the dog was quick to act.

"He turns around and lets out just this gigantic woof," says Amber. "And this man throws himself backwards, trips on himself and falls down."

Police later arrested the man. And thanks to Victor, Amber wasn't hurt.

She says Victor still bears the battle scars from being routinely beaten and forced to fight before he was saved last October from a dog-fighting ring in Graham.

"He's got tears inside his ears; his biggest one is the lip. This lip is supposed to be attached, not kind of poking out," Amber says.

Bullseye Dog Rescue and other shelter workers put the dogs through months of rehabilitation. Ultimately, most had to be put down.

"They didn't make it. They had some various behavioral problems ... because of the victims that they were, the cruelty they endured," says Lorrie Kalmbach of Bullseye Dog Rescue.

Victor was the exception - and Amber says he proved himself exceptional against the car-jacker.

She'd keep him if she could, but for now has agreed to be his foster mom until he can be placed.

"Bullseye has given him a second chance. I think he might have given me a second chance. He's definitely my hero," she says.

Victor and two other pit bulls named Hope and Phoenix have gone through months of rehabilitation and are ready and willing to be adopted into a good home.

----

Anyone interested in adoption can contact Bullseye Dog Rescue for more information.

Elgin OKs ordinance without pit bull designation

Great news... except for the threat at the end. Elgin must be pretty crime free and boring if all he has to do is watch pit bulls every waking hour.
Another article with pics from hearing

Link to article

Elgin City Council approved a watered-down version of a new animal control ordinance Wednesday in front of about 275 people who were in attendance to protest the specific restrictions regarding pit bulls.

Applause rang out through the Heritage Ballroom in The Centre in downtown Elgin when the ordinance was unanimously approved without the references that automatically labeled all pit bull breeds as dangerous.

The ordinance allows an animal control officer to designate a dog as either dangerous or vicious in the case of an attack of either another dog or a human.

A dangerous dog is a dog that attacks and injures, but a vicious dog is one that attacks and causes severe injuries or death.

The new restrictions include many new rules such as a dog declared dangerous or vicious would have to register with the city for a three-year, $100 license; the dogs would have to wear registration and rabies shot tags at all times, along with proof of having been neutered or spayed; and they must be micro-chipped.

Dogs in either category would also be required to be kept in a 6-foot-tall locked fence. The owner of a dangerous dog would need to secure $100,000 liability insurance, and an owner of a vicious dog would need to secure $500,000 in liability insurance.

Dangerous dogs on public property would need to be muzzled and on a short leash and with an adult 18 years or older. A vicious dog would not be allowed on public property at all, according to the new ordinance.

"I was crying. I am just ecstatic," said Linda Wyka, president and part-owner of Almost Home Foundation in Elgin that takes in homeless and rescued animals. The pit bull breed "gets a second chance."

Wyka said she feared that if the ordinance passed the number would double of pit bulls that she would see coming to her shelter to either find new homes outside of Elgin or be destroyed.

"It's not the dog, it is the owners that are the problem," Wyka said echoing just about all who opposed the automatic labeling of the pit bull breed as dangerous.

City officials attempted to designate pit bulls as dangerous animals in the new ordinance in response to residents' complaints of stray, unleashed pit bulls and a pit bull attack last spring that killed a 6-pound Chihuahua.

Councilman John Prigge said that although he "firmly believes that pit bulls are dangerous" he feels it would be acceptable to "give pit bull owners a chance to demonstrate that they are every bit as responsible as they've assured me they are ..."

But he said it is the city council's goal to ensure that all residents are safe in their neighborhoods.

"I will be watching. I will be vigilant," Prigge said. "If there is another tragic pit bull attack in this city or if circumstances otherwise warrant, I will request we revisit this issue and suggest we implement all of the proposed pit bull regulations to prevent any further attacks."

--Amanda Marrazzo

The third and FINAL reading is October 13, 2009, at 7:00 p.m. You can help stop this breed discriminatory law from passing!

Dandridge residents need your help to prevent laws that prohibit them from owning certain breeds of dogs. The breeds include Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, and Staffordshire Bull Terriers, and the ordinance may even incorporate language prohibiting any dog resembling a dog in what the city calls the “pit bull terrier family”.

Chicago- Non-BSL - Tougher Crackdown Over Dangerous Dogs?

Tougher Crackdown Over Dangerous Dogs?

Over the years, vicious and sometimes fatal attacks by dangerous dogs have prompted repeated attempts to target Pit Bulls and Rottweilers.

The Daley administration and Schulter have steadfastly opposed breed-specific bans.

...."It's not the animals that are the problem. ... It's the individual. This is an attempt to do something in those rare circumstances where the owners do not care."

Tougher Crackdown Over Dangerous Dogs?
Updated: Friday, 31 Jul 2009, 8:30 AM CDT
Published : Friday, 31 Jul 2009, 8:30 AM CDT

Owners of dogs designated as dangerous could be forever prohibited from owning dogs in Chicago if they thumb their noses at city safeguards, under a crackdown proposed by an influential alderman.

Ald. Eugene Schulter (47th), chairman of the City Council's License Committee, wants to yank the regulatory leash tighter than it has ever been yanked before in response to a recent incident in his Northwest Side ward that endangered area residents.

A man whose two Pit Bulls had been declared dangerous after attacking three people got them back after one year of behavior modification training -- on the condition that he abide by rigid safety requirements and only take them off his fenced-in property to go to the veterinarian.

Instead, one of the Pit Bulls escaped through the back gate and made its way 150 feet down the alley behind a street that's home to three dozen kids under the age of 10.

Although the wandering dog has since been taken away, the owner told Schulter and his constituents at a neighborhood hearing last week that he intended to get four more dogs and "feed them ragdolls."

"He is not a rehabilitated owner. He has paid money to modify his property and train his dogs. But, he hasn't learned anything. He just doesn't get it," said Steve Bensinger, who lives three doors away.

"Just replace the words, 'dangerous dog' with 'loaded gun.' I have three kids under the age of 7. I'm afraid his irresponsible actions will lead to some tragedy that is avoidable."

Over the years, vicious and sometimes fatal attacks by dangerous dogs have prompted repeated attempts to target Pit Bulls and Rottweilers.

The Daley administration and Schulter have steadfastly opposed breed-specific bans.

Instead, the City Council approved a dangerous dog ordinance that requires owners to: purchase liability insurance and indoor and outdoor pens; put up fences and signs; walk their dogs only if the animals are muzzled and on short leashes and in some cases, confine repeat offenders to their property.

Schulter's ordinance would get infinitely tougher.

It would impose a five-year ban on dog ownership in Chicago against any owner found guilty of ignoring the dangerous dog requirements.

And those with multiple violations over a five-year period would be barred forever from owning a dog within the city limits. Violators would face up to six months in jail. Their dogs would be seized.

As harsh as it sounds, Schulter believes the dog lover equivalent of the death penalty is justified.

"We're trying to send a signal out that, if you have dangerous dogs, you had better abide by the regulations imposed on you," Schulter said.

"It's not the animals that are the problem. ... It's the individual. This is an attempt to do something in those rare circumstances where the owners do not care."

Schulter's proposal was not the only dog-related ordinance introduced at Wednesday's City Council meeting.

Ald. Richard Mell (33rd) wants to impose a $300 fine against owners whose dogs create a nuisance by barking excessively, even after a warning.

"Some of these dogs bark all night long. A lot of people let their dogs sit outside all night. These dogs keep people up. There's nothing more irritating than a barking dog," Mell said.

Copyright Sun-Times News Group

I currently live in washington state, but we are moving to palm beach county in florida soon and I'm wondering if pit bulls are legal there. We're moving in with my mom who lives in Boca Raton and we have a one year old pit bull named shady. If we can't take her with us, we're gong to drop her off with my husband's brother in california.

If you don't know, can you at least direct me to a website where I can find out? thanks!

Trinidad group decries dog ban

THE Government is barking up the wrong tree by implementing the current Dangerous Dogs Act, a group called the Responsible Dog Owners of Trinidad And Tobago (RODTT) has said.

Spokesman for the group Ganesh Khoon Khoon told the Express last week that while the members had no problem with the idea of legislation to prevent acts of violence by, and to the dogs, this Act sought to wipe out the dogs completely.

"If you look at the Act carefully, you would see that they are trying to get rid of them by spaying and neutering. These dogs have a life span of about ten to 12 years, so basically in the next ten to 12 years, we will not have any pitbulls or tosas and that is not right or fair," he said.

The Act, which was passed in 2000 by the then-UNC administration, but has yet to be proclaimed, prohibits people from importing or breeding dangerous dogs, such as the pitbull terrier or any dog bred from the pitbull terrier and having the dominant characteristics of that dog, the fila brasileiro or any dog bred from the fila brasileiro and having the dominant characteristics of that dog and the Japanese tosa or any dog bred from the Japanese tosa and having the dominant characteristics of that dog.

World's Meanest Dog: The English Cocker Spaniel?

World's Meanest Dog: The English Cocker Spaniel?
Jennifer Viegas, Discovery News

May 22, 2009 -- A floppy-eared, innocent-looking breed may be one of the world's most aggressive dogs, according to a new study that found English cocker spaniels tend to be more hostile than other breeds.

The discovery adds to the mounting evidence that aggressiveness is an inherited characteristic, suggesting that genes and breeding practices can both help determine how a dog will behave.

"In our country and according to our database, the English cocker spaniel is the breed that shows more aggression problems," lead author Marta Amat told Discovery News.

Amat, a researcher in the School of Veterinary Medicine at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and her colleagues analyzed 1,040 cases of canine aggression brought to a nearby veterinary teaching hospital from 1998 to 2006. Of those cases, the majority of cases were attributed to English cocker spaniels, Rottweilers, Boxers, Yorkshire terriers and German shepherds.

Probing the data further, Amat and her team discovered that English cocker spaniels were more likely than other dogs to act aggressively toward their owners as well as unfamiliar people. In contrast, dogs with reported behavior problems from other breeds tended to act aggressively toward other dogs. Among the English cocker spaniels, golden varieties and males were found to be the most hostile.

The findings, published in the latest Journal of Veterinary Behavior, confirm an earlier study conducted by a separate Spanish team from the University of Cordoba, which also found males and golden English cocker spaniels were more aggressive than females or those with black and mixed-color coats.

In terms of coat color, Amat explained that the coat pigment melanin shares a common biochemical pathway with dopamine and other brain chemicals involved in the control of aggressive behavior.

Amat also noted that "inadequate handling by the owners due to their lack of information on dog behavior" is a contributing factor.

Other experts place even more blame on caretakers, suggesting there are no born-to-be-bad dogs, only bad owners.

Joaquin Perez-Guisado of the University of Cordoba led one of the earlier studies on English cocker spaniels and is the lead author of a new Journal of Animal and Veterinary Advances study that found poor training by owners predicted aggressive behavior in 711 test subjects from a variety of breeds.

Taking all possible reasons into consideration, he and his team found that 40 percent of dominance aggression in dogs is associated with a lack of authority on the part of owners, who performed no, or minimal, obedience training.

According to Perez-Guisado and his team, "dogs that are trained properly do not normally retain aggressive dominance behavior."

Members of the English Cocker Spaniel Club of America appear to agree. They describe their favorite breed as being "a homebody" that is "typically affectionate, loyal and reserved with strangers."

Indianapolis BSO Proposal Tabled

On Tuesday, May 12, 2009 the Rules and Public Policy Committee was asked to consider the At Risk Dog Proposal. The committee voted unanimously to table the proposal, citing the amount of time that it would take from other very important issues.

The Rules and Public Policy Committee is showing very little support for this proposal and it is unlikely that it will be brought back to the table.

HOORAY!

Lake County dog bite statistics, reporting skewed

Lake County in Illinois has a population of 713,000 people.

From January through April, there have been 500 dog bite reports, a 100 more dog bites than during the same time period last year.

Here is what it's interesting about the article - check out the sidebar.

First mention of biters? Pit bulls. Do we get to see the other 'breeds' after Pit Bulls?

No, this is the order of operations for the Lake County News Sun (take that, PEMDAS).

1) First mention Pit Bulls - 72 out of 500 dog bites.
Then mention:
2) Long and short-haired cats - 69 of the non dog bite reports
3) Horses - 1 bite
4) Bats - 33 bites
5) Coyotes - 7 bites
6) Muskrat - 5
7) Raccoon - 5
8) Skunk - 5
9) Rats - 2 wild
10) Rats - 1 domestic
11) Chipmunk - 1
12) Squirrel - 1
THEN MENTION the other dog breeds!
13) German Shepherds - 70 dog bites
14) Labrador Retrievers - 69 dog bites

Sometimes I get mocked for claiming there is a bias in reporting when it comes to dog bites. I don't think there is a grand conspiracy, but I think this points to a general desire to encourage fear-mongering by focusing on particular type of dog...even though the top three breeds involved in biting bet at essentially the same rate.

That is to say, you are just as likely to be bitten by a pit bull as you are by a German Shepherd or Labrador Retriever. What is more important to say is that you aren't likely to be bitten at all. A whopping 0.07012% of Lake County reported they were bitten by a dog. Let's argue that the 500 dog bites are only indicative of 10% of all actual dog bites (the other 90% go unreported) and really 5,000 Lake County'ians were bitten. That's still only a 0.7% of the entire population.

I'll go out on a limb here and say that Pit Bulls, German Shepherds and Labrador Retrievers are the three most popular types of dogs. I'd probably argue that Pit Bulls, as a population, are much larger and more populous than, for sure, German Shepherds. That means that very few Pit Bulls, GSDs and Labs are biting people. Very few.

As I keep reiterating - dog bites are uncommon and when they happen they are generally NOT major.

Yet, if you read this article, you might be left with an impression that a) there IS a dog bite epidemic and b) the most common biter is pit bulls...you have to get through a list of about 10 other species before you learn that German Shepherds and Labs bite at the same rate.
Family unaware of ban tries to get it amended

Good dogs with a bad reputation might soon be getting a second chance in Tonganoxie.

On Monday the Tonganoxie City Council directed city staff to look at reliable and impartial statistics on dog-related attacks to see if it needed to update its ban on specific dog breeds.

This direction came after Casey Allen approached the council to get an exemption from the city’s 16-year-old ordinance banning pit bulls and rottweilers.

Allen recently moved into Tonganoxie with his family, which includes a rottweiler. Allen said he was unaware of the ban when he came to Tonganoxie. Allen was given a 10-day notice to remove the dog from the city limits.

http://www.tonganoxiemirror.com/news/2009/may/08/city-council-look-changing-dog-ordinance/
