Notebooks in Gemini Apps

Gemini Notebook notebooks in Gemini Apps makes it easy to chat with your notebooks across Google products.

This integration gives you more ways to interact with your personal knowledge base:

Your notebooks appear in Gemini: Notebooks you create in Gemini Notebook will now automatically appear in Gemini's navigation. You can view, edit, and chat with your notebooks from either Gemini Notebook or Gemini.
Changes sync across apps: When you rename a notebook, add sources, or update custom instructions in one app, those changes sync to the other app. If you do not see your updates right away, try refreshing.
Gemini chats can appear as context: Opt in to include chats with a notebook in Gemini as shared context across notebooks in Gemini and Gemini Notebook, helping to build your notebook's knowledge base over time.
Sharing behavior: All shared notebooks created in Gemini Notebook, even ones you own, will not be visible in Gemini. You can continue to access these shared notebooks in Gemini Notebook as usual. Additionally, notebooks that contain Gemini chats are private and cannot be shared.

Gemini Chats in Gemini Notebook

When you chat with your notebook in Gemini, those conversations appear as context in your Gemini Notebook sources panel.

These Gemini chat threads:

Are read-only in Gemini Notebook (you can't edit, rename, or remove them directly from Gemini Notebook; they must be managed in Gemini Apps).
Contribute to your notebook's knowledge base, allowing Gemini Notebook to reference past Gemini conversations when answering your questions.
Are visible to collaborators if you share your notebook.

Tip: Turning off Keep Activity or deleting Gemini Apps activity in Gemini Apps does not delete data in Gemini Notebook. Learn more about how Google services retain data.

Custom instructions

Your notebook uses a single set of custom instructions across both Gemini Notebook and Gemini. Any changes you make to your notebook's instructions in one app will apply in the other app as well. Learn more about how to use chat in Gemini Notebook.

Key differences between apps

Source grounding: Even though your notebooks are available in both apps, chat responses are grounded differently depending on the app you use:

Gemini Notebook - Responses are grounded exclusively in your notebook sources.
Gemini - Responses are grounded in your notebook sources, but may also include web search and other tools.

Artifacts: Gemini will not have the ability to generate items from the Gemini Notebook Studio panel. This includes the ability to make artifacts such as Audio Overviews, Video Overviews, Infographics, Slide Deck, etc. These features are only available in Gemini Notebook.

Deleting Notebooks and Gemini chats

Deleting a notebook in Gemini Notebook removes the notebook and its sources, but Gemini conversations return to your main Gemini chat list.

Availability

The Notebooks in Gemini integration is available to Gemini & Gemini Notebook users in supported regions. Some features may not be available in all regions. Learn more about Gemini Notebook’s availability.

Data use and retention

The files you add to your notebooks and the chats you have in Gemini Notebook will not be used directly to train our foundational generative AI models, unless you provide feedback. Learn more about privacy and terms of use in Gemini Notebook.

The chats you have with your notebook in Gemini Apps are saved according to your Keep Activity settings and used as described in the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub.
