Zack Snyder (born March 1, 1966) is an American filmmaker known for his action and comic book films. His directorial debut was the 2004 zombie movie "Dawn of the Dead," a remake of George Romero's 1978 horror classic. Snyder followed that with his 2006 Greek action epic "300," starring Gerard Butler as Leonidas, the muscular King of Sparta. The movie became a pop culture hit and internet meme thanks to Butler's memorable "This is Sparta!" line. Following that, Snyder directed "Watchmen," based on the gritty DC Comics series, in 2009 along with the computer animated "Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole" in 2010. His first film based on his own original idea was "Sucker Punch" in 2012. Snyder entered the DC Comics world again with "Man of Steel," starring Henry Cavill as Superman, in 2013. His next movies introduced new characters to the DC Universe. As the rival Marvel Cinematic Universe grew, Snyder built out the DC Universe with "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" in 2016, which introduced Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ezra Miller as the Flash, Jason Momoa as Aquaman and Ray Fisher as Cyborg. All of the stars returned for Snyder's 2017 team-up film "Justice League." However, Snyder stepped down from the film during post-production due to the death of his daughter, and Joss Whedon oversaw the rest of the film. The final version that released in theaters was heavily criticized, and in 2021 an original director's cut called "Zack Snyder's Justice League" was released on Max. Also in 2021, Snyder directed a spiritual successor to "Dawn of the Dead" called "Army of the Dead," and in 2023 he will release an original space opera titled "Rebel Moon" on Netflix.ย
