Furs and friends;

I am taking a moment to advise the fandom that I am no longer Director of the Western Pennsylvania Furry Weekend after 12 years building the event up to where it currently is. As of our meeting on October 21, 2012, the committee nominated and elected FireFoxBC/Blithe into the role of Director for the Western PA Furry Weekend 2013.

Blithe has a lot of new ideas that he is excited to bring to the table and a brand new venue to work them into. He has my support as well as the committees that he will continue to keep the Western PA Furry Weekend a viable and fun weekend for all furs in Pennsylvania, the surrounding states and Canada. I hope you'll join me in welcoming and supporting Blithe in his new role with the organization.

Finally, I'd like to thank everyone for your support of our efforts over the last twelve years and for your friendship along the way. It's difficult to step away from something I've poured over a quarter of my life into; but I also understand that new energies and ideas are necessary for it to carry on and grow.

My time has come to an end; The torch has been passed; A new vision will carry us forward.

Swift Fox

Local furries and friends!

I am pleased to announce the dates have been changed for the Western PA Furry Weekend next year in order to accommodate our new single location venue.

The Western PA Furry Weekend will be held October 11, 12 & 13, 2013!

Our new location for Friday and Saturday will be the Allegheny County North Park Lodge
http://www.alleghenycounty.us/parks/images/gallery/np/lodge.aspx

With this NEW location we can keep the outdoor atmosphere that makes this event unique and combine it with the comfort an amenities of the Hotel function spaces. Plus this location triples the Square Feet of function space providing the event with plenty of room to grow! The lodge is two levels, heated and offers use of a commercial kitchen and cooler. There is also plenty of parking, a nearby athletic field as well as other Park Amenities that may be enjoyed.

The North Park Lodge does not have overnight accommodations. It is simply a large, two story, enclosed pavilion. The event is currently researching hotels near North Park for attendees to stay the night.
WPAFW 2012 Wrap-up!

Mother Nature made up for her lack of attention last year and provided us with a fabulous weekend to host the Western PA Furry Weekend 2012. (With all due respect to Mom N, as she can kick my furry little tail, she's only let us down twice in twelve years. Thanks Mom.)

The staff and I wish to thank the 98 furs from Pennsylvania and the surrounding States and Canada for attending and making all the hard work possible. I'd also like to thank our Charity Raffle Staff, everyone who donated something for this year's raffle, and of course our attendees, on behalf of ClarionPAWS, for their generosity in helping us to raise $2,230.00. Another new record amount.

As I announced at Closing Ceremonies, this will be my last year as Director of the Western PA Furry Weekend. I believe for something to continue to grow and flourish, new leadership, energy and vision need to be put into place. I believe the organization has found an individual mature enough to take the reigns of the event and keep it vibrant and viable. The WPAFW will make that selection official at our Follow Up meeting later this month.

It has been a joy and pleasure to foster this event and watch it grow over the last twelve years. It has provided a great opportunity to make new friendships and watch furs come to the event, relax and enjoy themselves. I won't go too far though; I have already been told that the event would like to retain my services in a smaller role.

We have a Survey posted on the PA Furry Forums if you would like to take a few moments and provide feedback on your experiences at this year's event.
http://www.pa-furry.org/node/4210/western-pa-furry-weekend-attendee-survey

So the Western Pennsylvania Furry Weekend 2012 is in the books. Next year we'll be hosting it the weekend of <s>October 4-6, 2013</s> October 11-13, 2013 at a New Venue, a New Hotel, and under New Management! (All of which will be announced at a later date...but we're all excited about the possibilities! We hope you are also!)

Thank you!

Swift Fox
Director; WPAFW12
www.wpafw.org

Long time fandom organizer and fursuiter PandaGuy passed away yesterday from complications from his long battle with diabetes. When I attended his picnics at Glen Echo Park back in the late 90's, it provided the inspiration to begin the Western PA Furry Weekend in 2000.

Our condolences go out to his close friends and family as they grieve. Be at peace now Jon, your legacy lives on in the heart of this fan organized event up here in Pittsburgh. If you have ever attended and enjoyed the Western PA Furry Weekend, please take a moment and give a thought or prayer for PandaGuy, and for his friends and family as they grieve over their loss.

PandaGuy Loses Battle with Diabetes

Hello everyone!

Mark your calendars! This year's Western Pennsylvania Furry Weekend will be held Friday September 30, starting at 7pm until Sunday October 2nd at ~7pm. Our Featured Artist is local anthro & anime artist Kyote! http://www.furaffinity.net/user/kyote/

This passed weekend the group kicked off 2011's event with our first progress meeting. As our first order of business we installed Flanowa, last year's Featured Artist, as our new Operations Chairperson. He's the #2 guy for the event and he'll be taking care of Programming and Logistics.

We have secured a contract for Fireman's Park and are in negotiations with the Comfort Inn Pittsburgh North to utilize their meeting room space and hotel again for our event. We will also be opening up a poll shortly to see if there is interest in providing a more comfortable hotel room block at another hotel facility two blocks off-site.

We are taking suggestions of non-profit, 501c3 organizations, committed to the welfare of animals, for the event's Charity in 2011. Currently nominated is Clarion PAWS; A Pet Adoption and Welfare Society serving Clarion, Forest, Jefferson, and Venango counties in Pennsylvania. http://www.clarionpaws.org Currently they are embarking on a capture, spay-neuter, and release program to control the stray cat population in the major population centers of Clarion, Forest, Jefferson and Venango counties in PA. The committee will vote to select the beneficiary of this year's fund-raising at our March meeting.

The committee is also researching how to add more efficiency to the cooking area for Saturday's cook out, thinking about what we can offer up this year for Supporter swag, and the purchase of some basic LED lighting effects to spice up the atmosphere at our dances.

If anyone has any programming suggestions for this year we'd love to hear from you! Comment here or send an e-mail to programming[AT]wpafw.org. If you have a suggestion for a non-profit for us to consider, e-mail that suggestion to event[AT]wpafw.org.

Stay tuned for more news here or on our website at http://www.wpafw.org

Swift Fox
Director; WPAFW'11
SEP30-OCT02; Pgh, PA
www.wpafw.org

Western PA Furry Weekend! Oct 1-3, 2010

Well the Western PA Furry Weekend is only three days away now and I wanted to toss out a few reminders...

We have Supporter Registrations at the door this year. We held it down to the pre-registration rate of $40. That means we have Basic to Supporter Upgrades available at the door also. So if you've already pre-registered at the Basic level...$15 at the door gets you all the perks and swag we offer to our Supporters...ALONG WITH FRONT OF THE LINE PRIVILEGES AT DINNER SATURDAY!! :)

Basic Registration at the event, for Friday night and Saturday, is $30. Can only be there for Saturday? No problem. We listened to your suggestions last year and Basic Reg on site at the park on Saturday is $25. For that you get two meals, dessert, a dance, activities at the park and the hotel, and a few free tickets to drop in the Charity Raffle!

Wait! You say you can only make it Friday or Saturday night? Let my team at Registration know you'll only be there for the night and you can enjoy a little of what we have to offer for just $10.

An industrious local fur took some time to load the WPAFW Activity Grid into a public Google Calendar. If you have a phone that can interface with Google Calendar, this may be a great way to keep tabs on what's going on over the weekend. Western PA Furry Weekend 2010 Google Calendar

It's still Construction Season here in Pennsylvania. PA Turnpike Interchange 48 is still under construction, but it's not too bad. The new bridge over the Allegheny has two lanes open in both directions now. The biggest travel head ache is PA Route 28 going north from Pittsburgh. A four year long road widening project has northbound Rt 28 down to one lane from the 31st Street Bridge (About a mile outside of the city proper) to the Etna By-Pass. It's pretty snarled through there during rush hour from 4pm until after 6:30pm so plan your travels if you're coming from the south and west accordingly. Let me repeat; RUSH HOUR IN PITTSBURGH IS FROM 4PM TO AFTER 6:30PM! Expect heavy delays at the tunnels, bridge crossings, and areas of construction activity. Please plan your travel accordingly.

As usual we have a lot planned for you to do. The WPAFW Staff and I are looking forward to offering you a fun and relaxing weekend in the autumn clad valley along the Allegheny River in Western Pennsylvania.

Hey everyone!

The Western Pennsylvania Furry Weekend is coming up on October 1-3, 2010, in Pittsburgh, PA. That's just over a month away and the staff and I have been busy getting everything ready for your arrival and a fun weekend of furry fellowship.

First, let me send my thanks to everyone who's pre-registered for the Western Pennsylvania Furry Weekend already for the basic and supporter levels! Thank you so much for your support of the event.

Everyone else...well what are you waiting for? Pre-registration closes on September 12th and with it your chance to save some $$ from the "at the door" rates.

Well for those of you still on the fence about attending, we've updated our website with a full Schedule of Activities for the weekend along with descriptions of the events we have arranged for your enjoyment. Aside from the signature "Fur-b-que" picnic at the park on Saturday, we have a puppet show, a menagerie full of fursuit antics, and dances on Friday AND Saturday nights. There are also games, a drum circle, a geocache, and laser tag. If you just want to come, relax and hang out with friends, we've got plenty of room for that too. All this is thanks to the hard work of our Operations Chair Cadpig Lion.

WPAFW.ORG

Akira Shima is once again gathering donations from near and far to once again provide a Charity Raffle that is second to none in the fandom. Our Charity Raffle is run like a "Chinese Auction." To augment the tickets that come with your registration, we sell additional tickets you place in the bucket for the specific items you want to try and win. All proceeds from the ticket sales are donated to our selected charity The Beaver County Humane Society. Over the past two WPAFW's the generosity of our attendees has raised $2500 for this worthy non-profit group.

Pre-registration rates right now are $25 for a Basic Friday and Saturday registration; a savings of $5 off the "at the door" rate for the entire event.
Pre-registration rates for Supporter memberships are only $40 and come with all sorts of swag to sweeten the deal: color print of the cover art, extra raffle tickets, front of the line privileges for lunch and dinner, as well as a special something currently in the works. Also! ONLY Pre-registered Supporters will get a $5 gift card to Denny's...have "breakfast on us" or save it for another time.

Registration will be open at the event. "At the Door" Basic registration is $30 on Friday & Saturday, $25 for Saturday Only. This year you can register or upgrade to Supporter for $40 or the difference between your pre-registered rate and the Supporter rate. On site Supporter registrations will get the same swag as supplies last, with the exception of the Denny's gift card.

We do have a small block of rooms available at the Comfort Inn Pittsburgh North at the rate of $74.99 a night which puts you right in the heart of the action Friday and Saturday nights. Reservations must be made by calling the hotel and reserving a room. The group name and number are available on the WPAFW website.

WPAFW.ORG

Don't miss out on this annual event! Join us for Furry Fun in the Autumn Sun on October 1, 2 & 3, 2010 in the scenic Allegheny River valley just outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
WPAFW News; Follow Up Meeting.

This weekend was the "Follow-up" Meeting for the WPAFW. It marks the last progress meeting for 2009's event where we discuss what went right, what didn't and what steps need to be taken to improve the event for 2010. We had a feedback form available on the website a couple days after the event. We invited attendees to express their thoughts about the event by giving aspects a rating from 1-5, five being the highest, and also providing written feedback on those aspects. Overall the array of items donated for the Charity auction scored an average of 4.5. The event itself scored a solid 4.0 and the average hotel rating was 3.5. We got a lot of good feedback that we took to heart as we set the ground work for 2010's Western PA Furry Weekend.

Next year's event will be held October 1-3, 2010 at the same locations. The hotel really enjoys our function. "It's a welcome change from the weddings and business meetings that they get all year round." The Committee agrees that we can't justify three digit per night room cost and want to continue to keep those costs lower than the norm.

The event will be making a total donation of $1200 to our event's charity the Beaver County Humane Society. We'd like to thank all our attendees for their generosity and everyone who donated items and services to be raffled off to raise another record amount this year.

We have adjusted the "at the door" cost of registering to attend the event based on suggestions from this year's attendees and an ever improving registration system. The good news is...rates will not be going up! "At the door" basic registrations will be $30 for Friday and Saturday and $25 for Saturday only. Early Bird and Pre-registration rates for the entire weekend will remain the same for 2010 as they were in 2009. We have also agreed to begin offering Supporter Level registrations and "Pay the Difference" Upgrades "At the Door." Supporter Level registrations will be $40; remaining the same for 2010.

I'd like to thank Xavier Fox Shandi, Javi Roo, and TOS for all their help and service to the event over the last handful of years and more. These chairpersons concluded their obligations on Saturday and stepped down from their positions. Cadpig JR moved from Hospitality to Operations this year to better get an overall feel for how the event is run and managed. Akira Shima has agreed to stay on to head up our Charity efforts and Silaria will once again be our Publications Chairperson. Last but not least, I'd like to welcome Blithe as the new Registration Chairperson, Dobie Tanpaw as our new Technology Chair and Fire Lupine our new Hospitality Chairperson. So that's the new line-up for 2010.

Keep an eye out for our ads and fliers at your local furry conventions, and when you get your calendar for the new year, flip to October and pencil in WPAFW on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

Thanks for your support!

Swift Fox
Director; WPAFW'10
www.wpafw.org

Hi folks!

It looks like I'm already seeing some great pictures from last weekend's event and I thought I'd let folks know that the WPAFW has had a picture gallery on Timduru's Galleries of Pictures from Fur Cons around the world.

Having a presence along side the major conventions gives us a little bit of presence in the fandom and we'd like to continue to take advantage of that.

So, if you have pictures from the Western PA Furry Weekend 2009 and would like them showcased in our event's gallery on Timduru's site, please e-mail me at event AT wpafw.org and I will forward the ftp instructions to you.

Thank you!

Swift Fox
Director; WPAFW'09
www.wpafw.org

Western PA Furry Weekend - Director's Wrap-up

The Western Pennsylvania Furry Weekend 2009 is officially complete and we've put together another successful event.

We had 95 attendees who hailed from New York State, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Washington State. We remain an international event drawing in attendees from Ontario also.

While we were short a few heads, possibly deterred by the state of the economy, those 95 attendees raised a record $1,155 toward our charity the Beaver County Humane Society. That's up $66 from last year.

I'd like to take this moment to thank our Featured Artist for 2009, Jon StarRazor, for his support through the year. As we embark now on next year I am proud to announce our Featured Artist for 2010 is Flanowa J. Hopper!

A big thanks to the folks without whom this event wouldn't happen; my department chairs, their staff, and all the volunteers. No event runs smoothly without competent folks looking after key tasks and positions.

2010 marks a decade of hosting the Western Pennsylvania Fur-b-ques; 14 separate events in that ten year span. We hope you'll come and join us as we celebrate year number 10 the weekend of October 1, 2 & 3, 2010!

I hope everyone who attended had a great time. We'd love to get your feedback on the event and this year we have a digital form you may use right on our website: http://www.wpafw.org/feedback.html

Thank you all very much!

Swift Fox
Director; WPAFW'09
www.wpafw.org
